So you get off on telling people to go Google... don't you think that might be an issue you need to talk to somebody about? Well I'm here to tell you that is an issue... it's a condition that needs to be addressed with your attitude.

People come to these forums for help... that's the whole reason for the existence of forums like these... this forum specializes in computers. Computers *help* most of the people at these forums make their pay check... so it's help is very important and when they need help they ask questions here.

People ask questions and people help them with their questions... see how sane and logical that is? See how much sense that makes? Therefore if you're here you're either helping somebody with there problem or your asking questions about your problem.

So let's now break down the only good argument for telling somebody to go google... You feel that the person asking you a question is a "noob" so you tell them to go google... because you feel that google is the end all to all tech support questions and that anything they can ask here can be answered on google about their issue. OK, fine then... tell them to go google but you'll obviously need to tell them what google is since they are "lost" here at this forum.... Did you wake up one day and figure out what google was... all on your own? Explain to them that google is an excellent search engine... tell them what a search engine is... then tell them how to use a search engine. Now that they know google, google will help them with some of their issues.

Forum pitfalls:

Your post count: 2000 years from now nobody will care about your post count... why should you? Saying "go google" for it gives you at least 20 posts more per day to say on top of your post count to make you look leet? Forget it. That's an issue for a pysc to handle.

Your race, religion, or sexuality: This forum is extremely big... with a rather diverse population... people here do not share the same veiws... but guess what? NONE of thee above has anything to do here with computer tech support... no... none of it. So plug it in your signature and move on.

Your anonymity: You can get away with being a jackass because nobody here knows you. Do I even need go here to tell you what's wrong? Well let's do. Don't think your screenname will save you... you feel the need to be a smart ass? Find yourself... ON GOOGLE... a forum that supports it... here: http://www.straightdope.com/ I've done half the work for you.

Why the **** did I post this? Why?! I see it all the time and really would rather not have to track your ass down and beat the snot out of you and ruin my prestine background of no criminal record.

If you simply must talk about google or your paid to or whatever your love for google is put it in your signature... maybe like this:

"I love www.google.com It will help you with all your issues. I personally can't live another day with out google. Have YOU googled today? "

So now I'm finished. No telling who I've pissed off with this one but more than likely if you've got to post trash you should be mowing your lawn or at work or playing golf... you know, SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE.

I think, depending on the question, if it's something asked way too much, I can see why people would ignore it. I find google to be simply more effective anyhow. Sure you can ask the questions, but what if there is a site for it that can answer it and then some? I don't have a problem helping people out. Though I'd get annoyed too if I was asked a repetitive question. (Where do I find icons or apply them...etc)

Holy sh!t a serious post!

Then why not go to google... search for them, and then post the search link? It comes off better than go google newb. Just a suggestion.

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day.
Teach a man to Google, he stops bothering people with simplistic questions for a lifetime.

Seriously, googling should be the first point of finding a problem. Why ask people to put in the effort into answering your question, if you haven't put any effort into finding the answer first?

I've found that Google isn't perfect. There are some things that are harder to find, even if you know how to search. Sometimes it's just better to ask a person. I've found stuff based on someone's link, and reverse searched it on Google which came up empty.

now turtle... even your signature proves that common sense is not so common... People in this forum are behind perhaps the most user friendly computer on the planet and we've got people telling people to go google and people asking questions too simple... there is a dollar to be made by simply being nice!

Really ? How ?

Honestly, Tyler, I'm not sure what your point is anyway.

I don't mind good questions, but I do mind people wasting my time. 50% of the questions can be found within seconds by using Google.
Now if that kills your job, I'm sorry for you... You'd better get on the job hunt...

Honestly turtle, how are they wasting your time? Don't answer questions that piss you off! It's that simple.... Do you get paid to answer these questions or something? If so I want in...

And my job is not tech support... it's much worse.

They waste at least a couple of clicks...

And on a serious note:
How did I learn not to ask stupid questions and Google for myself first ? By getting ranted at myself for being lazy. You learn by doing mistakes, and then you correct them.

Other example: learning to use the forum search function.
Once you get spammed a dozen times by the timeline-Nazi, you get tired and learn researching first.

Bottum line: if you don't tell people to use Google, some will never learn it.

My point is this forum is a damn good thing... Like Linux, but tech support... for *free*. If you're not in "The spirt of giving"... in this case giving advise, don't give... otherwise it's a troll. And the IT industry has enough trolls already.

And yes, that's why I rant around here at the forum.

And I'm not saying don't tell people not to go to google... I'm saying do it with a smile.
