A new report from Good Technology on enterprise mobile use has shown that Apple's iOS continues to be the overwhelmingly dominant choice of systems for corporate mobility, with some 88 percent of all business app activations and 90 percent of tablet activations on the platform. However, Android apps climbed to 12 percent of app activations, a gain of four percentage points from the previous quarter, while Android devices climbed to 32 percent of activations versus iOS' 67 percent.

The activations measurement is another real-world indicator of how well the platforms are doing with end-users compared to "shipments" figures, and confirm a recent US survey that showed iOS devices with about double the percentage of Android devices, roughly a 65-35 split among mobile web browser traffic. The corporate report mirrors this finding almost exactly, including the slow rise in Android device and app adoption.

Windows Phone activations have seen no noticeable gain, still accounting for less than one percent of activations. Good Technology's enterprise services compete as an alternative to BlackBerry Enterprise Server, and thus there is no trace of the Canadian smartphone maker in its rankings.

Enterprise continues to be dominated by iOS, however, with 88 percent of app activations and 67 percent device activations. The study, based on statistics from Good Technology's enterprise customers, also showed a closing of the difference between tablet and smartphone app activations. Overall tablet app activations were more common than smartphone app activations, 58 percent to 42 percent. For tablets, the top three apps most likely to be activated in the quarter were document editing apps, document access apps and custom apps. The latter category has continued to rise in prominence, now accounting for a quarter of all app activations.

Secure messaging apps are the top category for smartphones, but were the third-most popular app overall. Office-type document management and editing apps continued to be the top seller across platforms and devices. Other categories that showed significant growth quarter-over-quarter include business intelligence apps (such as stock and financial news apps), with CRM apps also gaining in popularity quite significantly. Overall, reports Good, enterprise application activations are increasing 20 percent quarter-over-quarter.

Good also noted that the government and public-sector categories of industries saw an increase of about five percentage points in total iPad activations compared to last quarter. Financial services, manufacturing, high tech and business/professional services all saw significant increases in overall activations quarter-over-quarter.
