I'm trying to verify for example anytime we try in a browser on a test machine to go to cnn.com, we instead get directed to timezone.com.

I think the proper format for an entry is:
209.85.225.105 Macnn.com

In the above case, any attempt to go to the URL, will get redirected to the IP Address (Google, in this example)? Is that correct? I think I see that working.

But what if the user attempts to navigate to a more specific URL like Macnn.com/SomeForum/?

What should happen then?

Thanks very much in advance!

In your example you've edited the hosts file so whenever macnn.com is used it's exactly the same as going to google.com. If someone tries to browse to macnn.com/someforum it'll be the same as browsing to google.com/someforum, and thus they'll get Google's 404 error page.
