I have a data drive on my PC which is NTFS. Because that machine's boot drive was starting to have problems, I decided to copy everything from the PC's data drive to my Mac's backup drive before fiddling with the machine.

I stuck the NTFS drive in a Firewire case and all seemed fine. OS X was able to read the drive just fine... except for a few directories.

I stick the drive into my PC again, and all the directories are there. Go back to my Mac, and those directories are missing. Put the drive back into my PC, and the directories are there.

Interestingly, if I SMB mount the drive from my Mac, all the directories are visible.

It seems to me that OS X's mounting of NTFS is wonky. Or am I doing something wrong? It seems to work fine otherwise, and there's nothing special about these directories that I know about. They just have a bunch of pics in them.

Finally, I just burnt the files onto CD and transferred them over manually.

(BTW, if Apple were to release a headless xMac tomorrow, I'd be very tempted just to replace this PC completely with one. )

What are the attributes (right click, properties) on those folders?
One iMac, iBook, one iPod, way too many PCs.

i'm assuming osx recognized as an firewire drive and it appeared on your desktop so can't you just drag the drive to your drive to back up everything on it even "unrecognizable data or will that not work.

It's a Firewire drive icon on the desktop. I grabbed the entire parent folder and copied it, and about 3 folders (buried deep) just didn't show up at all. It's not there when I browse the drive either, but they work fine in XP (and mounted via SMB).

Read only but many other folders which work fine are also listed as read only.

I only found that out after noticing that my several hundred MB vacation pix folder was about 100 MB short on the Mac. After manually inspecting each folder I found noticed the files were missing.

Hmmm, I had first imagined it was an attribution issue (some directory or file marked as H?).

This is prob obvious but what do the missing folders or files have in common?
One iMac, iBook, one iPod, way too many PCs.
