The easiest way is to use Fink Commander. Fink is used in the command line in the Terminal, and Fink Commander is a GUI interface to that.

I would suggest that you download the bundle-kde as a binary for your first exposure. A binary is already compiled thus is muuuuuuuuuuuuch faster to setup and go. First time I d/l'ed a kde source package, it took 6 hours to compile on a 500 Mhz G4.

There is a fink-beginners mailing list that is very responsive and has a couple of moderators who are on the ball. There is also a great FAQ and Intructions website.

Once kde is downloaded, it is simple to activate. Depending on your $PATH in X11, usually start-kde will do it.

Takes a bit of poking and there is a definite learning curve, but it's worth it.

Reading Package Lists...
Building Dependency Tree...
E: The package xfree86-shlibs needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.

I get this error when trying to download bundle-kde.. I tought you didn't need xfree86...

xfree86 will conflict with X11. You want to install system-xfree86. This is a placeholder that will satisfy the need packages have to check for xfree86. This is a binary install and goes quickly.

I suggest this mailing list- https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/...fink-beginners. There is also a searchable archive that is extremely useful.

This is the source of all answers- http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/users-guide/index.php.

You have an existing X11 installation in /usr/X11R6 and/or /etc/X11.
This package refuses to overwrite these. Remove them, then tell Fink to
install xfree86 again. (The package won't be recompiled.) If you want
to keep your X11 installation, install system-xfree86 resp. system-xtools
instead to make this known to Fink's package system.

??? what does this mean?

You know, You could have just ran apt-get install bundle-kde-ssl It would have been much easier than fink IMO cause it would have down the downloading for you

Tried that, got an "unmet dependencies" message with the advice to try "apt-get -f install". Did that, and got this:

dpkg: error processing /sw/var/cache/apt/archives/libxml2-shlibs_2.5.4-1_darwin-powerpc.deb (--unpack):
corrupted filesystem tarfile - corrupted package archive: Undefined error: 0
Errors were encountered while processing:
/sw/var/cache/apt/archives/libxml2-shlibs_2.5.4-1_darwin-powerpc.deb
E: Sub-process /sw/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

So what's my next step?

remove libxml2-shlibs_2.5.4-1_darwin-powerpc.deb

Then selfupdate, followed by update all. The try again.
