If that's the worst of it, good for your friends.

Saw a picture of two smoke clouds and hearing one seems to have occurred from inside a building.

You beat me to it.

Also: those not in the US or in the New England area - today is also Patriot's Day, which is a big annual holiday for Boston and the surrounding area. There's a lot of shit going on in the city today - not just the marathon.

I'd pretty much bet money this was an act of terrorism.

HuffPo is keeping up on everything going on about this on various news sites, twitter, etc.

Right at the finish line, definitely not an accident.

There was a Red Sox game earlier and Bruins game tonight, lots of people in the city right now.

Just 2 explosions so far, may not be a bomb.

I'm going to try to go slower with updates in this thread – there's a laughable amount of misinformation in the Newtown thread from a couple months ago.

I guess it was inevitable that terrorists would realize bombing high-security targets was a difficult problem and would switch to the easy target of high profile crowds.

Let's hope it was just an accident and not terrorism.

The photos at the scene are very disturbing. People injured in explosions near Boston Marathon finish line - World - CBC News

Most certainly smoke, and fire. Fairly large looking blast. Just saw a shot of a guy missing a leg.

The fact that the two explosions occurred in two different spots 10 seconds apart pretty much ruled out this being an "accident".

Site of the Boston Marathon Explosion | NYTimes.com

Now the question is who did this and why?

I disagree. A failure in infrastructure would have near simultaneous results as they failed, right? (i.e., explosion in sewer causes multiple manhole covers to launch near simultaneously)

As if they haven't been through enough, the Newtown VIP section was apparently close to one of the bomb explosions. No word on injuries.

There was also another bomb which went off at the JFK Library. Quite a distance away from downtown where the two others went off.

Well AP is reporting that cell phone service has been shut down in Boston to prevent any accidental remote detonations of unexploded devices. So I think it's a done deal on whether or not it was intentional or accidental.

I saw the vid boston.com sports was taking. the explosion was in the crowd. Read somewhere it was trash cans.

Friend I knew in the race, luckily he finished and was on the way home when it went off.

From the vid the emergency responders had trouble removing the barrier to get to the other side to help people.

We were home today.

Humanity. sucks.

Uhm, well, depending on which side of the aisle you're at, it's going to be called a conspiracy.

No matter if it was done by a right-wing nut or a hard-core jihadist.

So glad you're okay. Figured you were a safe distance, but worried anyway.

Go watch the videos of people running IN to help -- humanity as a whole doesn't suck at all. My hat's off to the ones who dove in with no regard for their safety to help the injured.

Hope they catch this bastard.

I saw a local article that said the bombs were pressure cookers filled with ball bearings.

He could very well be, early reports from him are that he might have seen some pretty nasty stuff.

At any rate us quaint Mass residents are a bit sedate today, someone actually let me turn before them at an intersection. Also, silver lining time, possibly one of the best locations in the world to get seriously injured and need top tier medical attention and from what I'm seeing the Boston PD did a hell of a job

Envelope tests positive for ricin at Washington mail facility - CNN.com

Another attack, this time a letter laced with ricin meant for a US senator.

The timing makes it unlikely to be coincidental, but what the hell is the relevance of that senator?

But a child was killed. No longer should parents have to worry about pressure cookers when they go out with their children. And don't forget ball bearings, those need to be banned to. And brads. All nails in fact. Larger nails are obviously more dangerous so we need higher punishments for those too.

If this a serious post, than you've done a poor job of understanding the underlying concept of gun control.

I have never understood what drives people to be a total, utter, dick in the face of tragedy.
Would you care to enlighten me?
