I have noticed in Panther (can't remember if it happened in Jag) that every once in a while the mouse pointer arrow just disappears when hovering over certain areas of the screen.
This just happened with Safari.
Has this happened with anybody else out there?
Powerbook with 10.3.6. Happens with corded, wireless, and trackpad.

Only thing I've noticed is that in Safari, if you scroll using the up/down arrows the mouse pointer will disappear until you move the mouse/trackpad again. I guess it's so you can read the web page without the pointer in the way.
Is this what you're experiencing?

What I am experiencing happens near the top left corner of the Safari window. If I try to click on the bigger/smaller font buttons, or the back/forward buttons....that is the specific area the pointer disappears. Weird.

This has happened to me. I'd say it probably happens to me about twice a week on my home machine, always with Safari.

Perhaps understanding mouse pointer behavior might help explain this.
For one thing, Mac OS has always been kind enough to hide the mouse pointer when a user begins typing, or scrolls a text document (I assume this requires some cooperation from the application). Of course, it comes back as soon as you move the mouse.
Furthermore, applications can define what mouse pointer (be it a system standard pointer, or a custom one) when hovering over a particular region of a window or screen. Web browsers make extensive use of this, traditionally using the hand-with-one-finger-extended pointer for links, the default arrow for most everything else, and the I-bar for text. For some reason, Safari is getting confused as to when to use what pointer. In most of the cases I've seen this, all it takes to get it to come back is to switch to another application, to force the operating system to re-inquire as to which pointer to use.
(Yes, I know this is a gross simplification and bastardization of the real internal processes, but it's close enough for this purpose.)

Yes, I've noticed this too, and it's not the standard 'hide-the-pointer-while-typing' behaviour either.
It seems to be only in Safari, and always in the top left.
Looks like a bug to me.

I'm getting this...I think it does indeed have to do with the annoying Flash/Java based ad banners...

Yeah, I noticed the top left corner Safari bug a couple of nights ago. I am on 10.3.5 and have not applied any of the recent Apple updates. I cannot reproduce the bug.

Yes, same here too, same spot. Not pressing any other buttons/keys. I think it may be relating to Flash or animated GIFs, but it could be just coincidence that I notice it when there's one of those in the window.

This has been a bug for quite awhile. I just use the Apple key + back arrow key and that temporarily takes care of it.
