I watched Robots last night thinking it would be ok.
Ah, no. Terrible terrible writing.
The whole movie seemed to be made up of 10 second joke clips that the animators come up with. No depth to the story, no connection, nothing. And the scary thing is it wasn't even Robin William's fault the movie stunk which is a first.
I mean a 5 second Britney spears dance number the in the middle of the big dramatic fight in the end?
Every joke is highly predictable and totally pointless. It is also full of Teeny Pop music for no reason. The camera is also stationary for most shots.
On the plus side I really liked the Art Direction. The animation was ok, camera work poor, modelling ok. Nothing that comes close to Pixar
I understand how these companies operate though. They know they can't beat Pixar in quality so they beat them in quantity and still come out making money. They get a 75 mill budget, don't take the time to animate it well or write it but instead throw the money towards licensing songs and getting big name celebrities to do the voices. If they can get it to market 6 months faster they see it as worth it. Kids don't give a **** and pore into the theatre.
I think Pixar is even more incredible to me now.

Yeah, I can't believe I wasted money to see Robots.
Watched The Incredibles last night and laughed way too much.

I love The Incredibles. In my opinion, each Pixar movie has been better than the last. I'm not so sure about Cars, though...

Having gone to a media design course I can tell you that the 3D geeks do these cheese little sketches all the time. For example the part where the metal shavings stuck to the main character and created afros and other stupid hairstyles for no reason. Same goes for that Britney bit.
It is cute in a 15 second sketch but doesn't fit into a story or even make sense.

There was an article in Time a couple months ago about Steve thinking about selling Pixar -- even to Disney -- if the money is right. I guess I'm ok with that as long as the writing/animating team goes with the sale and not just the name.

Agreed. Though after seeing the commercial during the Rose Bowl I do feel better than I did after seeing an early trailor way back when. I hope it works out.
There was an article posted somewhere online today about Jobs selling Pixar. I think it might be the 'nn but I'm to lazy to go look.
Carry on.

I actually saw Robots in the theater, and it was for me exactly how SWG described it. Lame, and painfully deficient vis-a-vis a Pixar effort.

I have yet to see it... Shark Tale looked really awful, seems the only computer animated movie that has really challenged Pixar on any level has been Shrek, though frankly the sequel was piss poor, sure people saw it, and laughed a lot, but again the jokes seemed more like the sort of stuff you come up with when sitting around trying to think of the next half funny thing to put in instead of genuinely inspired stuff.

Whenever I see a "Dreamworks sucks/Pixar Rules" discussion (and I have seen them on various boards, not just Mac-centric boards), I always wonder if there is a board with a thread out there that is is "Pixar sucks/Dreamworks rules"?
I have never seen one...

I saw Robots in the movie theater down in a theater on Fremont Street in old Vegas, in the middle of the day, on a Thursday. My wife and I were the only ones in the theater. We made out instead.

robots was cute, some great scenes, but nowhere near pixar quality, agreed. Robin Williams needed to tone it down a notch, and it needed... something. But my kid is not so discerning, and likes it.
Shark tale was downright annoying.

Kids movies are fecking awful. Robin Williams started the problem with the highly obnoxious genie of Aladdin. Back then, everyone thought, "how clever, a kid's movie with a comedian who appeals to both children and parents!"
But now, lame, cynical, loud-mouthed, sarcastic characters like the Genie fill up most kid films.
I don't know who it appeals to. Take Shrek for instance, the jokes are not understood by most children, and no adult in their right mind finds them funny. Perhaps creepy "Kiddults" like Michael Jackson enjoy Shrek... :-\

Make waffles for me?? I thought you'd never ask!!!
Are we good buddies now, just like Shrek and Donkey?
Something tells me I'm the Donkey in this relationship being funny, loyal, and cute, and you are the Ogre...
