A Mac trojan aimed at stealing Bitcoins -- known as OSX/CoinThief -- has been found attached to pirated copies of more mainstream apps, says security firm ESET. Initially the malware was bundled exclusively with Bitcoin-related tools, but ESET says it has now found CoinThief in cracked versions of titles like Angry Birds, BBEdit, Pixelmator, and Delicious Library.

The code carries a browser add-on capable of stealing logins for Bitcoin wallet sites, as well as exchanges like Mt. Gox or BTC-e. ESET comments that based on its data, the trojan appears to be most active among US Mac users. As protection it simply recommends keeping antivirus software up to date, and downloading apps from legitimate sources. If necessary, though, the trojan can be manually removed using instructions from SecureMac.

Ironic, Bitcoin is illegal anyway so it serves them right.

Asinine click bait headline uses the term "popular" when it should have use "pirated". Such sloppy wording makes it look like Apple is not preventing hacking when it is the people that provide and use pirated software that are the problem.

Bitcoin is illegal?

Or did you mean Bitcoin is not a government-recognized currency?

You don't go to jail for dealing in Bitcoins. You go to jail by swindling people out of or stealing their goods (Bitcoin theft, which is theft of goods), or using Bitcoin or Bitcoin exchanges to launder dirty "real" money... but it certainly isn't the "Bitcoin" part of those two things that's illegal.

Hey, here's a novel notion: pirated/cracked software is OFTEN the source of malware, so not pirating apps seems like a good way of avoiding problems.
