I'm thinking of purchasing one of the new Intel iMacs. Very tempting!

I'm currently using the older 20" Cinema Display which uses the ADC connection (connected to my PowerMac G5 at the moment). I want to be able to connect it to the Intel iMac when I decide to purchase it, for extended display.

From what I understand, I would have to buy a mini-DVI to DVI adapter AND a DVI to ADC adapter (priced at $99!!). Would this setup work?
Any issues with DVI-D and DVI-I? Not sure if this applies at all, I've just read comments with those terms being thrown around.

Thanks!

I'm not sure why you need you need a buy a mini dvi to dvi connector

As you can see the DVI connector is your normal run of the mill DVI. You should only need the $99 DVI to ADC Adapter. The mini DVI to DVI adaptor is for Powerbooks.

IIRC mini DVI is just plain old DVI-I in a more compact plug so it fits well in small notebooks like the PB. Get the dongle to go to normal DVI and then use the DVI->ADC converter (which is actually just a splitter (USB and DVI) with a power supply). It should work fine. Don't worry about DVI-D and DVI-I. All Macs output true DVI-I and since the screen requires the digital video signal, you're perfectly fine.

The DVI-ADC is in fact $99 from Apple, but during a firesale they're sold for $39.99. My local store usually has at least one on firesale at the end of each month.

Check out eBay and craigslist, you might find a deal on either site.

Yes, you're correct, you will need a mini-DVI to DVI adapter ($20ish) and a DVI to ADC converter (the $99 one, not the cheap $30 pin adapter).

FYI, you may be in for a little wait. While its a new ball game because Apple is on the intel platform, they did just releasee the new iMacs and they may not push a refresh through until the whole line has been updated. Even if they don't wait, seeing that the mactel iMac is fairly new it will still be months (several?) away.

yeah i bet they will wait a while, at least until everything is updated. i would go for it now because there's always going to be a newer, faster model, and if you buy it while its new it will be the faster/newer model for longer.

Yeah, I understand. I'm not in a position to buy a new Mac right now though. I'm a poor college student so money is a bit tight. I'm willing to wait for the next refresh (less than a year I'm sure). I was just curious if I could still use my current display as a second display.

I had to get the mini-DVI adaptor actually marked for the 12" Powerbook, but it worked!

21" 2.5 Ghz Core i5 iMac | 13" 2.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo Macbook
20" Cinema Display | iPhone 4 32 GB
