I have an external HD connected to an iMac via USB using Time Machine. I also have a MacBook and would like to access this HD over the wireless network to use Time Machine.

On the iMac I've selected the HD under filing sharing but I still can't see the HD on the MacBook.

Can anyone provide help? Thanks.

It doesn't work over the network with anything but the Time Capsule.

The capability to back up to a network drive was actually present in early betas of Leopard, but switched off for the released version, presumably for technical issues, but maybe not.

I've heard bits about there being a valid technical reason for this - extra data verification via the device's firmware or some such, but it's probably mostly a marketing decision.

You can still turn it on via some hack, but it may not work reliably - which rather defeats the purpose of a backup.

Did you search the forum before posting? The details escape me, but they have been covered several times before.

Or with a drive connected to an AEBS.

What? I've been backing up to time machine wirelessly without a time capsule or AEBS for half a year now.

If I remember correctly, it's pretty simple.

Partition a drive just for time machine. I have the hard drive connected to my Mac Mini. Open up Time Machine control panel and select the partition for Time Machine to back up to.

On my MacBook Pro, I mount the same partition use for Time Machine when connecting to my Mac Mini on the network. Make sure you store the login and password to your keychain so Time Machine can backup to the remote drive. Open up the Time Machine control panel on the MacBook Pro and select the remote Time Machine partition to back up to.

That's it.

Originally with Leopard, it didn't. One of the updates fixed it. I think it was when Time Capsule was announced (January 2008).

Well it works for me too. My method seems to be plug-n-play using this little utility.
