Really quick question...
If I went to Apple and was willing to pay them the difference, you think they would paint my white MacBook black?
Just curious. I really wish I had gone black lately but don't wanna sell or have to transfer information to a traded MacBook or something.
Thanks,
-Caitlyn

i think colorware will be your only option, unless you perhaps feel comfortable spray painting it yourself and voiding your warranty...

or you could go online and hopefully find a top shell bottom shel and inner covers and make the swap that way if you feel comfortable doing all that.

Take it to your local body shop -- but talk to friends and family to find the right shop. You may have to take it apart partially.

the trouble is the macbook keyboard assembly you'll have to paint that but the keys and assembly are really intergrated. It would be difficult to produce an aesthetically result.
You could check eBay to see if any DOA laptops, i.e., for parts are available.

Agreed but it would be a quick fix. And you are right about ebay maybe buy a keyboard and battery.

I also wonder what painting would do to your warranty. Since the computer needs to be disassembled I would expect that this would void the warranty even if Colorware does it.
I'm personally tempted by the colorware option but I'll wait and see if I can pick up a cheap black macbook on craigslist, ebay or apple store (refurb).

Apple will replace the shells for you. It'll cost a lot though. I bought a US model Macbook when on holiday in the US, and when I got back to the UK I asked about getting a UK keyboard fitted. The Genius Bar said I'd need a new top shell, which would cost around £100 including labour.
So if they can replace the top shell, don't see why they can't replace the whole lot.

The lighted Apple logo on the black MacBook cover tends to end the Dell confusion. I've had a Black MacBook since they came out and couldn't be happier - especially when in a room with users of White MacBooks. It's totally an expensive vane item, but worth the price for exclusiveness in a cookie cutter world.

FWIW Speck plastic cases give the appearance of a different color laptop. They come in a variety of colors but apparently not black.

I really think that Apple would do this. I'm sure that there is a "painting room" somewhere in Cupertino for just this purpose.

Apple won't repaint your white Macbook because they are selling the black Macbook at a premium price. So it is not just because the white Macbook 2.0 ghz has 80GB and the black Macbook has 120GB. In 1999, Apple released the iMac DV SE at $1399 and it was translucent graphite color. You got 13GB versus the standard 10GB. If you look at their history you will find evidence that this is repeated again and again. There is nothing special about the black Macbook other than its color. Do not pay $400+ on a color upgrade for your white Macbook. People get color upgrades all the time but the resale value is not as high because buyers don't want their Macbooks "modified" and it just looks better in white.

Considering that Apple has *never* done this (the custom black Mac TV units were done by an external company), and that the black MacBooks are actually black plastic and not painted in any way - no.
Not outside their research department, anyway. Apple hasn't painted anything since the titanium Powerbook.

Well, my friend works at Apple and he says that there is a special "painting room" especially for this purpose - all the ppl that bought a white book and now want it to be black. Apparently the room is right next to Steve's office so he can personally check the finish of each book that comes off the line.

Paint, No. But replace the covers, I think they will. It would cost a good lil bit but I've thought about it too but I love being the guy with the White MacBook in class, this girl has a Black one and they treat her like she has a Dell (Subtle racism? Maybe)
