That's just sad.

I'm hoping to pick up a DS lite in a week or so, I've never really played them much. experiences? recommendations?

From the reading I've done, I'm thinking New SMB / Mario Kart / Zelda / Elite Beat Agents will be my first purchases

I think this is a really good summery of what the Wii is and why it sells the way it does:

"Right, Zelda I really didn't enjoy on it. They back-fitted the control scheme on it, it was better on the GameCube. Mario, I wish there had been a button instead of wiggle and all that kind of ****. So I haven't played anything that I really wished hadn't been on another platform sadly enough. It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. Obviously there's a class of people who really love it and enjoy it and are getting into the games but I'm still waiting for that one game that makes me play it. Who knows, maybe Wii Fit will be it."
IGN: NYCC '08: Talking Gears 2 and So Much More

But again, the real important thing for all of us is that Nintendo is making money so that's better than good games anyway.

I'll recommend Professor Layton. it's a very .... unconventional game.... it highlights the separation between story and game-play. Those two elements are so loosely coupled in this "game" it almost made no sense to throw them in together.... but strangely enough.... it was engaging and fun, except for a few of the puzzles.

I just got through Phantom hourglass...and thought it was an excellent game. my only complain being that annoying temple of the ocean king. i was amazed at the production values and the control especially for such an 'underpowered' handheld. It made use of all the DS features at least once. (i wont mention them here cause it'll just ruin the surprise for you ).

Have fun.

edit>>ive never played a poke-e-mon game..and i think they suck anyway.

I agree entirely and this is what has happened both last generation and this generation to me, personally. It didn't go the same way both times, but it was similar.

Last generation, I got a GameCube, mainly for Super Smash Bros. Melee. Played it a lot, enjoyed it, etc. Lots of fun. I got some other games too, but after a little while, I ended up selling it because I got bored. There just weren't that many great games. I switched to an Xbox and enjoyed it a lot more.

This time around, I got a Wii, thinking it would perfectly complement my PC gaming. Well, the same thing has already happened. I bought the Wii in March and I've already gotten bored and gotten a 360 instead. I still have the Wii, but I'm strongly considering selling it. I might actually just get a GameCube since I can still get Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart for it, and they're so cheap (Gamestop sells them for $30!).

So yes, Nintendo got me with the "hey, that's really cool!" virus, but the lack of good games (Waggle-infused rehashes of all their old standbys) has turned me off. It sucks that I spent so much money on the Wii and related accessories and games... I could have gotten a 360 and a decent TV to go with it right from the start.

Same with me. I had a lot less time to play games, so I decided to just get a GameCube last gen. after a few years I realized that it just wasn't going to work out, so I bought a Xbox as well.

This gen I've actually been more into gaming again, and the Wii gets about 10% of my attention...

If the Wii was my only console, I think I would go nuts.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

I think if the Wii used a standard controller I would have bought one for Zelda and Mario Galaxy by now. Even if it is a waste to spend 250 for a 2 game system.

You can use a GameCube controller with Twilight Princess... not sure if you can for Mario Galaxy, but since the only real difference between the GameCube and the Wii is the controller, it seems like a waste to play games with the old one (even though it's better in many cases).

Well, if you just want to play Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc. on a GameCube controller, there's a perfectly fine console out there called the GameCube that costs just $30, and every single game supports the traditional controller!

Twilight Princess is available for the GameCube.

And worldwide sales are:

Wii - 24.45 million
Xbox 360 - 19 million
PlayStation 3 - 12.85 million

Shacknews

And the Wii has a healthy 28% lead over the nearest competitor. I wonder how Nintendo's increased production capacity will change those numbers by the end of the year.

Not much progress for the 360. Not even a million units in 3 months.

And jesus, is the PS3 getting shellacked here. Can't wait to see the numbers for after the GTA release, though.

The NPD numbers for April (post GTA IV and pre WiiFit):

Hardware:
Wii - 714.2K
DS - 414.8K
PSP - 192.7K
Xbox 360 - 188K
PS3 - 187.1K
PS2 - 124.4K

The Wii almost doubled the combined sales of the PS3+XB360, despite GTAIV. *shock n awe*

Software:
1. GTA IV – Xbox 360 – 1.85 million*
2. Mario Kart Wii – Wii – 1.12 million
3. GTA IV – PS3 – 1.00 million*
4. Wii Play w/ remote – Wii – 360K
5. Super Smash Bros. Brawl – Wii – 326K
6. Gran Turismo 5: Prologue – PS3 – 224K
7. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness – DS – 202K
8. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time – DS – 202K
9. Guitar Hero III – Wii – 152K
10. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare – Xbox 360 – 141K*

Of course that doesnt make the Wii 'better' and no one buys software for the thing</end sarcasm>..... despite the Wii having more titles on the list than the XB360 or PS3. I guess Nintendo must be buying its own hardware and software to inflate those numbers

So i GUESS GTAIV wasnt the console seller M$ and $ony were hoping it would be eh ? in fact i think the XB360 and PS3 hardware numbers are actually lower than March(im not sure).
Also, i wasnt expecting MarkKart to pull off those numbers, at most i was thinking third place with less than 1mil sales, given the hoopla surrounding GTAIV.

Cheers

I just picked up a component cable for my gamecube ... now I have metroid prime progressive scan on my 720p TV!

I'm not positive, but I think it looks better than it did with the s-video cable.

Anyhow, although I do have a PS3, I plan on picking up as many gamecube games as I can while they can still be had ... they are cheaper now, and I still think the GC games are pretty amazing, if pale next to the PS3. Anyone play the medal of honor games? I hear they are good.

Of course it can! But only if that software is made by Nintendo.

Wii Play is an exception since it's bundled with a remote for only $10 more. In a way, you could say that the game is 80% Nintendo and 20% whoever-made-Wii-Play.

Like I said, only Nintendo games

Seriously though, there are a few good third-party games for the Wii, but the vast majority are just terrible. The ones that aren't terrible are usually at least disappointing. There have been only a handful of truly good third-party Wii exclusives. Probably the same number as there have been good Nintendo games.

The fact that a significant number of the Wii's best games are ports from other systems says something about Wii game development. Okami, Resident Evil 4, The Godfather, Bully, and even Twilight Princess were originally for other platforms. Then again, a lot of the Wii's worst games are also ports, though there are plenty of bad "straight to Wii" games too.

The problem is that the Wii isn't powerful enough to get any of the big, epic games that come out for PS3 and Xbox 360. And since the developers for those systems figure that most Wii customers don't want those games anyway, they don't waste any effort to port them over and cut them down to size for the Wii.

It's actually sort of confusing. The Wii has sold almost as many units as the Xbox 360 despite being on the market for a full year less, and it's selling at a much higher rate. Where are all the games? Do most Wii customers just buy the Wii and never play anything other than Wii Sports and possibly Wii Play forever? It's really unfortunate for people like me who bought a Wii but don't fit into the "casual gamer" demographic—that is, people who actually read video game reviews and don't buy bad games.

"That's Mama Luigi to you, Mario!" *wheeze*

I agree with you on most of what you said. Personally, i think i fit into the "Cas-core" gamer market. Like you pointed out most of the "good" third party titles are ports(from previous generations none the less).... which begs the question. is there a AAA third party title on the Wii, which is not a port and developed by an 'A-Team' ? i think not.

I dont know what stats these publishers are using, but unless you actually put in the effort and then gauge the reaction, you can never be sure about the level of success/failure the Wii market can provide for a specific game type, imo.

The only indicators of AAA titles on the system we have thus far are...well Nintendo games, and the reception has been very successful and hence profitable.

If it costs a lot less to develop and publish a AAA title for Wii (when compared to XB360and PS3), and given the much larger worldwide marketshare of the Wii, if third parties choose to shovel crap and not invest into developing AAA titles... how do they expect to make money ? And then blaming Nintendo for their own poor effort seems misguided. it's just bad business, and if i was a person with stake in these companies, i'd either sell my stake or replace the people making these terrible business decisions. lots of lost opportunities imo.

Cheers

The numbers for every single console on that list are down from March.

I'm probably out of touch, but if either MS, Sony or Nintendo come out with a cheap easy way to connect their consoles to a PC monitor, their sales will really explode.

Microsoft have this -

I have one to connect my 360 to my Dell screen, with my Macbook connected by DVI.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

You do realize GTA only moved consoles for a whole two days in April?

Are these numbers US or Worldwide?

Yep, you're out of touch. It's been out since 2005 on the 360.

Including pre-orders, however. I doubt the console-less pre-ordered.
