Doofy,

If you weren't acting like such a jerk, you could have easily "shaped" this thread. All you needed to say was "I not so interested in adding a computer to the mix" and that would have been the end of it.

Also, I've pointed out a few options using a computer and/or using AE to having a digital output and was called out on it twice when the reality is, it seems to perform rather well. If that's not the direction you want to go, fine, but don't call me out saying I don't know what I'm talking about.

Look at my first and second posts in the thread. Now, do those posts make it sound like I want to use a computer in this set-up?

So, I'd already said I didn't want to use a computer by the time you came into the thread and starting going on about hacking a MacBook. It was the end of it when I'd found the item myself "never mind, I've found it" (kudos to the two blokes who suggested alternatives).

And yet you think I'm the one being a jerk?

A lot of it is the sound quality. Burr-brown ICs do a much better job of converting digital autio to analog than your standard iPod or receiver.

Even MP3s can benefit from this. You'd be surprised what a good digital to analogue converter can do to even lossy MP3s.

Are they worth $3500? Well, if you can afford it, then probably. For me, I paid $600 for a CD player. My friends thought I was nuts. But it has Burr brown decoders in it as well, and sound much better than a cheap CD player.

Anybody who spends more than $400 on a car is a ****ing moron.

Spending $75,000 on something a used old Nissan Cherry does for $400 seems to be pretty retarded. If it's the shopping, I think it's much more intelligent to hack up Rob and steal his car than it is to spend that much money.

Is this as opposed to a non-armchair audiophile?

Obviously not well enough to know that the best place to listen to music is... ...sitting in an armchair.

I don't think his brain's actually powerful enough to comprehend things like jitter.

And you'd be wrong.

I run a sound system as the sound engineer once a month.

And I record and edit for a podcast weekly. And the podcast has both music and spoken word.

Is ignorance bliss ambush? Go do my dishes.

It's done for money.

professional: Definition, Synonyms and Much More from Answers.com

And it's not your typical podcast as I am recording musical performances along with commentary and the bit rate is higher than the Apple iTunes Music Store.

So do professional audiophiles, except they're more like the winegrower than the armchair wine freak.

We distribute in 256 kbps and still some people aren't happy.

I guess you could say it's a little more than your typical podcast. But technically it is a podcast.

I really don't care if you believe me or not. Doesn't affect my life.

Now go do my dishes.

In most things in my life I tend to want complete control over everything I truly enjoy. Control freak? Possibly.

Examples:

Beer. I make it for my tastes. Best ingredients, best methods

Furniture. I make it to suit my uses. Best woods, best techniques.

Music. I produce it to the same level as I like to listen to it. But doing it for other people I am forced to meet their expectations. The cost is nothing to me because they are paying for the equipment. Someone wants something above the ordinary, they are going to pay for it.

Not to knock you or anything, but you're going to be all snobby audiophile on us and get a hard drive based player?

Common, what about analog interference created by the HD?

No but seriously, I don't know the setup you're going to use, but an mini with a smallish lcd and some removable hard drives would just plain kick ass running Front Row all the time (b-e-a-utiful), but I can understand if you want to go all "ease of use is everything" on us.

It's mainly for ease of use. And I don't want a computer anywhere near the setup.

This is why Airport Express and my MacBook work great for me. So far I have resisted putting a computer in my rack. I have all my music on my Powermac in my office, shared via iTunes. I access the shared library from my MacBook and stream it to the Airport Express hidden behind the rack. AE is connected to my preamp via optical cable. I basically use the MacBook as a "remote". I suppose I could copy all my music to the MacBook and eliminate Powermac from the system.

Sometimes computers are like using a sledge hammer to hang a picture. When finesse and ease of use are involved, add a computer to the mix complicates things.
