Um, has it occurred to you that they are both using MovableType, and that they are both using a template that's most likely available to everyone who uses MovableType Blog system? They both use custom mastheads, but they are probably based on the original template.

Just to inform you of our opinion:

Josh,

As stated on our website's homepage since day one we released the new version, our design is indeed heavily inspired by Douglas Bowman's StopDesign website, which is in our opinion is one of the nicest websites on the internet (hence the inspiration). Although, I readily admit we used Doug's site to learn how one accomplishes certain features on a HTML page, and correctly program CSS based websites (these people belong to the small group who are guiding the CSS revolution going on at the moment on the internet) , I would like to stress we started our website completely from scratch and have generated all images ourselves. You will hopefully acknowledge that many design items on our site are unique to mekentosj.com. Also notice that we don't use Movable type, nor any other blog engine to generate or site. We hope that after reading this, you don't consider our site a simple, 5 minute, rip-off. We don't deny it shows resemblance, in contrast we took leads from Douglas Bowman's website because we think it's one of the best website designs out there (even though many blogs site have a very similar layout nowadays).

Finally we would like to refer to the following article on sitepoint. Our philosophy while designing our website, is nicely sumarized in the last part of the article: "copy the inspiration, not the outcome". We realize that this will in the end come down to personal opinions.

http://www.sitepoint.com/article/cop...esigners-steal

Perhaps we can continue our discussion afterwards...

Best wishes,
Alex & Tom

Ehh, MT doesn't come with that template. As it is Doug Bowman designed Wired Magazine's web site (among a few other famous ones), I doubt he needs to use a canned template. Actually, he designed several of the canned Blogger templates.

That said, the design would seem to be inspired by Bowman's site but it is not a entire ripoff. The DIV names aren't the same.. the CSS is slighty different.

[edit] and as I was typing that the designers responded...

You didn't copy the inspiration--you DID copy the outcome. Your site is not inspired by Stopdesign, it is a rip of it. There is no excuse for this.

You may have created images on your own or changed the CSS or whatever, but it doesn't change the fact that your site is a copy of another's, and a bad one at that.

Welcome to digital arts. Face the obvious fact: 50% of everything you make is either based on, inspired by, ripped off, salvaged, hacked, etc.

Too many have been on gfxoasis lately. I see no rip-off on the site mentioned. I see that someone got inspired.

Oh get off your high horse.

In fact it so bad a copy of the site that I wouldn't have noticed if it hadn't been mentioned. So bad that it looks far more an inspiration than a copy. But as a site that's been inspired I say it's really quite nice.

Yeah, and the OS X login panel reminds me so much of the Google site - it's got that text field, some buttons underneath, logo on top, it's centered, white background - it must be a rip off!!! Damn you Apple!

i've definitely seen worse copies on the internet as far as the overall likeness. of course the original is quite a bit more successful as they usually are also...

with that said, saying "copy the inspiration, not the outcome" is quite telling. if you think copying anything is right than i think that tells the entire story...

but this is simply a part of digital media and this debate will go on and on... it is a part of all digital media debates biet music, design, porn whatever...

keeps things interesting... thats for sure.

my 2 cents... get inspired, learn from others... then do your own design, music, or whatever... simple and very effective.

peace.

I agree that the side does remind me of stopdesign, it is not a rip off, since almost everyone who designs something takes a piece of another design and uses it. Example: you made a sig out of a Lanham picture. I made mine out of some art from Leo Hao. We rarely make stuff that is totally, 100% original, not inspired by another piece of art. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who has.

It means "I agree."

It's stupid, but whatever.

This is why the GUI forums are boring. To many people who are up-tight. I had something that said "I agree, and you made your point well" and I'm pushed into a name-calling match. Haven't you guys ever been on a thread in the lounge?

Anyway, the actual app is kinda fun. It serves absolutely no purpose. None. Zilch. But I guess it's a piece of eye candy. Another app to customize.

(I should probably stay out of this but I just love a good arguement)

First: Fireside, you are a douche.

Second: Clinton eating a squirrells nuts is not meant to be smart or witty. The creator of it wasn't thinking "this is quite possibly the genius-est thing any one has ever said in the history of the world!" You clearly don't understand things can be so stupid they're funny. And you're probably a manuplative control freak who must always be the smartest person in a conversation considering what a douche you are.

Third: You clean out vaginas. That's your purpose. Stick to it. Or rather you make vaginas less sticky, you big f*cking douche.

I agree with everything on point 2 with the exception of the last two sentences.
A little harsh. But then again I'm a "imbescile" (say it with the ile part sounding like "eye-el", not "el." That nakes you sound smarter.)
