I have used Unerase/Filesaver as part of Norton Utilities in the past to recover files that have been deleted but I no longer have it installed.
Unfortunately, I have an important folder of documents that was placed in the trash and emptied yesterday. Does anyone know of any file recovery utilities that could help me out? I have not catalogued my HD with any utilities. Is it a lost cause?

I Looked around for third party software briefly last night but couldn't find any for ya....I'd stick with norton. I did however find a lot of apps to erase stuff in different ways to make sure that they stay permanently erased, shredded and dipped in battery acid.....for the paranoid, but that's off topic.

It's too late for this now, but if you catch it right away, reach around and turn your computer off. Do NOT do a Special/Shut Down, just turn it off, even if you have to unplug it. Wait a few seconds then turn it back on. Your files may still be in the trash.
I've done this a couple times with wise guy students who throw away an incomplete file that they didn't want me to see, and then they claimed it was an accident. Imagine their dismay when I shut their computer down and bring it back up and pull the file out of the trash. :-)

files recovered in this fashion are readable? I've notice a folder in the trash "recovered files" when it's shutdown as you described but I thought those files were useless as they appear to be.
