I'm ahead of the curve today: May's Results:

turtle777 ...............6
Andy8 .................5
Spheric Harlot .......5
Big Mac ................4
BLAZE_MkIV .........2
brassplayersrock² ...1
CharlesS .................1
ChrisF ...................1
l008com .................1
rjenkinson ............1
Shaddim .................1
Subego ..................1
Waragainstsleep ..1
Total ......................30

Commentary:
Good participation this time, with plenty of very early catches. In a surprise, turtle topped out the list, beating out both Andy8 and Spheric Harlot. Not much of a "contest" if we don't have a little competition, and this time it was definitely competitive.

We had 36 total spam reports, with 5 involving spammers already reported. Some extra reports were by the same member, so that bit of insurance that the bad guys were dealt with was useful. Only those five spammers got to post enough to warrant multiple reports, which is a good sign that you folks are keeping those eagle eyes on suspicious posts.

Thanks again for helping to keep us as spam free as possible!

I was traveling overseas for almost two weeks, maybe the time zone difference does give an advantage.

Didn't expect that. Thanks for compiling it, Glenn.

Once again I scored only once during a month! Hmm, perhaps scoring more per month will help my ego a bit. Thanks Glenn for getting the numbers up.

I am behind on collecting and analyzing the data for spam reports from June (i.e. I have not gotten to it yet). I should be able to get things done and posted by the end of Monday thought. Just thought I'd mention this, as I don't want anyone to think I forgot or something...

OK, how about kind of early on the 4th?

Andy8 --------12
Spheric Harlot -5
turtle777 -----5
Big Mac ------4
amazing -----1
Brien --------1
kainjow ------1
Total---------29

On June 27, smartchoice reported himself. How about a round of applause for June's "Short Bus Award" winner?!
There were 36 member reports of spam, on 29 individual spammers. We had 5 multiple forum/thread spammers (one got up to 3 reported posts!). Must be summer holiday time in Spammerland. Anyway, great work folks!

July results are in. It was a pretty slow month, all things considered. On the other hand, we had some very persistent, and sometimes prolific, spammers. As usual, our trusty gang of spam reporters were all over the issue, and except for our fast and furious spammer gyuhuyfdhq (selling Ugg boots, among other things in a lot of our forums), only a couple of bad guys managed to post more than once. On to the stats!!

Spheric Harlot -------13
Andy8 --------------3
Big Mac -------------3
angelmb ------------2
BLAZE_MkIV ---------2
l008com ------------2
turtle777 -----------2
brassplayersrock² ----1
bstone -------------1
CharlesS -----------1
phantomdragonz ----1
subego ------------1
The Final Dakar -----1

Total Reports: 43
Total Spammers: 33
Most Posts: 8 by gyuhuyfdhq
Repeat Offenders: 2 by buy1newnow, 2 by kinsai, 2 by retalondon

Analysis:
We had quite a few attempts to sell people shoes, but most of the spammers were stopped short by quick and thorough reports. Some of our most effective reporters, particularly rjenkinson, didn't make the list above, though their reports helped identify additional posts by bad guys who had already been reported slightly earlier. We of course thank everyone who participated, but please don't think that reporting a second or third (or more) spam post isn't worthwhile. It was reports like these that helped catch what must be one spammer who slightly altered his nick to re-register after being banned quickly for his first spammage.

A quiet month may mean that everyone, including spammers, likes to take a break in the summer. From the look of August so far, I think they are back on the job. Stay sharp folks, and again thank you so much for helping us clean up on aisle MacNN!

It's the first weekend of the month, and time once again for the Spam Reporting Contest results!!!

August was odd; it was the "Month of Credit Card Thieves' Spam," among other things. Here are the stats:
41 individual reports, 28 “first” reports, 21 spams by repeat/mass spammers. Pretty heavy duty, right? Either someone sprained a few digits spamming us, or their bots earned overtime pay. For a change, I'll summarize the worst spammers, and then get to who did the most work in helping us eliminate them.

The Villains:
mocksell, credit card dumps, 4 spams
demian johns, credit card dumps, 3 spams
justinmac, credit card dumps, 3 spams
weiweiee, Shooozz!, 3 spams
gabon, credit card dumps, 2 spams
Chafkins, Apple shipping/weirdness?, 2 spams
Zhakz, credit card dumps, 2 spams
meimeiii, More shooozz!, 2 spams

The Heros:
Spheric Harlot -----6
turtle777 ----------5
Andy8 ----------2
Big Mac ----------2
rjenkinson ------2
The Final Dakar -2
brassplayersrock² -1
CharlesS ----------1
darkelf ----------1
imitchellg5 -----1
residentEvil -----1
SSharon ----------1
subego ----------1
Waragainstsleep -1

As always, my heartfelt thanks goes to each and every member that reported spam, even if you didn't show up in the listing. Remember, you might just be the ONLY person who notices a spammer, and your report helps, even if you aren't the first to report that particular spammer.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

September Spam Report results! Time for data!!!

Spheric Harlot ------15
Andy8 ----------6
subego ----------3
Big Mac ----------2
rjenkinson ------2
turtle777 ----------2
Waragainstsleep -2
Athens ----------1
brassplayersrock² --1
Brien --------------1
chabig ----------1
imitchellg5 ------1
MacNNUK -----------1
Shaddim -----------1

We had more credit card spammers, but we also had folks trying to get us to buy purses, kookie iPad accessories, shoes, and so much more exciting stuff! Yeah, right, exciting. Anyway, once more we had spammers that managed multiple posts before being snuffed out, some with 4, a few with 3, but not the volume of multiple posts that we experienced in August.

Once again, thanks to everyone who reported anything of note; every reported spammer is one that gets zapped that much more quickly.

The results of October's Spam Reporting Contest will be delayed until at least tomorrow. I was at a professional conference all last weekend, and this week has consisted of "usual workload" with "catch up from last week," so I'm behind on the spam stats. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Sorry for the delay. As I had some time this afternoon, I did more than simply tally up who reported which spammer first. To start off, here are the results of Spam Reporting:

Spheric Harlot -3
turtle777 -----3
Andy8 -----2
CharlesS -----2
imitchellg5 -2
subego -----2
angelmb -----1
Big Mac -----1
boy8cookie -1
macforray -----1
residentEvil -1
rjenkinson -1
SierraDragon -1
Total ---------21

More stats:
Total reports: 70
Potential Spam: 43
Validated Spam: 31
Repeats: 10
Total for contest: 21
Complaints: 23
Staff Member Reports: 4 (We sometimes use reports to identify "potential" spammers, such as suspected "Q&A" team members)

Analysis: October was a slow month for spam in general, and our gallant band of spam-slayers were in fine form, frequently reporting ambitious spammers in rapid succession. Great work!

On the other hand, in October, there were more complaints and reports of what was not spam than reports of actual spam. Unsurprisingly, all of the complaint reports were from PWL posts. A large percentage of those were “that was a personal attack!!!11!!!” reports that, on typically minimal discussion and immediate consensus, the staff decided were totally NOT attacks of any sort. Some of these reports came from thin-skinned members who didn’t like someone else asking them to show evidence or simply disagreeing with their conclusions. Others were from members who felt that ANY disagreement was an attack. Sheesh! This illustrates my point in the “Merge the Lounges” thread that it’s difficult to define something like “what is a personal attack.” Sorry for the soap-box time, but it always helps to have real data when you make a point.

Keep up the great work, and let's keep the forums spam-free!

OK, this time I got the stats compiled pretty much "on time."

November didn't have many spam events, at least until the end of the month. We did see some less ordinary spammers, but for the most part they were boringly (and easily identifiably) typical. So without any more delay, the results:

Spheric Harlot --9
Subego --------4
Big Mac --------3
Waragainstsleep -2
Andy8 ---------1
auto_immune ---1
MacNNUK ------1
SierraDragon ---1
The Final Dakar -1
Total ----------23

Thanks for all the assistance on this, folks. I anticipate that the December spam situation will go from "meh" to "yikes!" in short order. Let's see how this month stacks up; maybe we'll have some real action!

Well here it is only Tuesday, and I have the December Spam Reporting Contest results! It's amazing what a day off can do for productivity!

Sideline commentary: not much action in December, only 18 valid reports, and one was reporting a spammer that had been reported by another member in a different thread one minute earlier. Still, congrats for the hard work. And lest you start to think that reporting spam is not helping, you should all know that your reports help us on staff know what to watch out for. It's been an odd month to be sure, but the reason there were only 18 reports is that the spammers seem to have been slacking. They're obviously way behind quota, and I expect plenty of action in January.

Not to lessen the win, turtle, but yeah, 3 isn't very impressive.

On the other hand, this does show that reader50's intensive work on blocks, integrating the forum community's spam blocking tools and other work has paid off. The blocks just keep getting better at stopping the majority of spammers at our front door, and the staff diligently stops those that try the back and side doors, while you and the rest of the members keep us informed when the slime slips in through a partly open window.

I anticipate that some time soon we'll be seeing new attempts using different strategies, and the numbers for the contest will get to be quite high. Then 3 will again be way down in the "also helping out" end of the contest number, and you, and Spheric, and Andy will all be back in double digits while we figure out how to cramp the spammers style yet again.

Spheric Harlot ......3

BLAZE_MkIV .......1

Great job, folks! There were some pretty sneaky, and pretty stupid, spammers in March, and your efforts got 'em all. With 28 unique spammers reported, there were only a couple of overlaps. In short, you were efficient and the staff ran with your reports so most spam didn't stay there very long at all.

Keep it up, and thanks again!

I just happened to see this thread and look at that, I'm on the list 5 different times. Go me. I always report spam in situations where it may actually do some good. In fact I just filed an FTC do not call list complaint today for an automated junk call that dialed my cell phone

I'm sorry to say that there are no dancing girls, and unfortunately, the "worth the wait" part fell through too. I had thought that there had been some really good "we crushed a spam ring" events to report, but unfortunately we seem to have only scared off a few of them instead. They aren't bothering us, but they're probably bothering others... Oh well, there's always May.

Great work, folks!

P.S.: I've given up on trying to format the results neatly. Between the differences in how the edit box and vBulletin handle spaces and tabs, and my (currently) caffeine deprived brain, I'm just going to let it go.
