I have a 600Mhz snow iMac coming to me and was wondering what games will play decently on it.

600Mhz G3
1GB RAM
16MB ATi Rage Ultra
40GB

I have Quake III arena...that should play decently.

Any others?

Unreal 2003?
Realmyst?

any other recommendations?

older games. 2/3+ years should all work.

Quake III... yes.

Unreal Tournament 2003... no.

Unreal Tournament original (1999)... yes .

You should also be able to run less demanding games like Diablo/Diablo II, Starcraft, EV Nova, Deimos Rising, Oni... just tossing a few out there. Many of those hark back to the good old days of gaming, when Mac versions were just as good as PC versions and ran as well too. Diablo II in particular is extremely fun and will keep you busy for a long time.

On my 600MHz G3 iMac I have:
Ev Nova
iConquer
Gutterball
Bejweled
TextTwist
Super Nisqually
Super Glinx.

You should be able run Starcraft under OS X, and you may get away with running Giants: Citizen Kabuto, all be it with the graphic settings dropped a bit.
If you boot into OS 9, that'll open you up to something like Deus Ex (right?), and Riven (which is still OS 9 only, double right?). I'd guess that is you want something other than a puzzle type game (i.e. most of my list), you'll be better off looking back to OS 8 and 9 games.
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

err minor point of clarification ut original will only run if the computer is classic it will run on osx through the classic emulater but it will go really slow it will go faster on a 300 G3 than on a 1 ghz g4 alot faster.

Do yourself a favor and download Airburst from strangeflavour.com... I'm sure you'll love it! (And the sequel should be coming within weeks!)

Play UT on my PowerBook in OS X all the time. Other than some graphical oddities it plays well.

As for other games, if you like RPGs Baldur's Gate II should play fine. BG I should also but it's OS 9 only. No One Lives Forever was also a fun game that should play on your machine. Diablo II is great fun. So there should be a good selection of games to play...

I have an iBook 500 and have Black and White, Oni and Aliens Vs Predator. All are playable for me (although I'm not going to be winning any prizes for framerates) so should be fine on your machine. As games, I prefer AvP and Black and White over Oni. The 'Escape Velocity' series from Ambrosia Software is good and runs fine (although the sharware cost is pretty much essential to make the latest version playable and I think $40 is too much, if that's still the price). Also I recommend SNES or Sega Genesis emulators, downloadable from the web. I've got the most enjoyment out of playing Super Mario All Stars, Donkey Kong Country and Sonic on my Mac.

Good luck, happy gaming!

Rune + Rune: Halls of Valhalla [Rune Gold] (presuming you're going to be running OS 9.x or earlier).

Best.
Game.

I don't care to write down the already mentioned.

Soldier OF Fortune 2: Should run well
Ghost Recon: turn everything on low on no, and it should go smooth!
Medal Of Honor: AA: Yes it works!
WarCraft 3: At least with new g-card, it will run fast

DIablo 2 and StarCraft (with expansions) is a must for every gamer with respect for himselfe.

You should consider to buy yourselfe a new grahpics-card, that would boost your computer.

WIth new g-card, thses games would work as well:

HALO: I'm not 100% Vabout this, but I am pretty sure it would run usefull.
NeverWinter NIghts: Should work well, perhaps even without g-card.
UT2k3: WIll not run fast, but fast enough to be played.
Jedi Knight / Jedi Knight Academy: Should work brilliant with new g-card.
Dungeon Siege: at low, lowest and no, it will go with about 20 FPS, if not more.

juanvaldes: I daresay even games 1+ year will run.

That's all for now.
-Have fun with your new iMac

BTW: If any of you are playing sof2 or StarCraft, let me know!

I'd suggest Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (a really fun, highly-polished 2D platformer, with multiplayer deathmatch and capture-the-flag modes) if you can find it. The Mac version is kind of rare, though, but it's worth it.

A jj2 player, that's rare to see nowadays!

PLayed jj2 quite a bit some time ago... I wasn't very bad player, so If you'll need anything jj2 related, say: list-patcher, allowing you to play with peecee users after contrabandent took over, maps and some trix with the config-files.

Think Tank must not be forgotten, btw ;]

Lots of good suggestions here. I'll add Myth/Myth II to the list. Go to http://www.playmyth.net and you can download Mac OS X ports of both games, and can even download the entire Myth solo campaign to play in Myth II (you must have a purchased copy of the game in order to use the ports). They even have a Mac OS X native installer you can download so if you can't (or won't) boot in Mac OS 9 you can still install the game after you buy it. You should be able to find Myth II on eBay or in some bargain bin for $10 or less, and it is infinitely expandable. You can find total conversions as whacky as Myth Lego and as carefully realistic as World War II: Titans and American Civil War.

Finally, you should be able to run Freedom Force, and if you can, it is a game you simply will love if you have any affection for Silver Age comics. This is another game you can find on the web or in bargain bins; I got mine last year for $15.

Best wishes,
John H

edit: I just have to add that older iterations of contemporary games, such as Quake II and Quake, are still great fun, have Mac OS X ports available free (still have to purchase the game to run them, but at maybe $5- for some of these....), and look great with Mac OS X and OpenGL. And don't forget GameRanger http://www.gameranger.com which is a free Mac-only player-matching service which also provides very easy access to Quake, Quake II, Quake III, Unreal, and other public servers where you can find both Mac and PC users to play with.
