i know this has been discussed to death, but i've kinda lost track of the thread. rumour was that there would be a speed-bump update in september, probably at the paris expo. is this still expected? it does seem overdue so here's hoping...

this is what i'd like to see revealed for the 15" pb:

* processor speed increase (1.7 has been rumoured)
* g4 processor upgrade (and i don't mean G5 - can't see it happening)
* standard hard drive increase to 100gb (i'd love it if they could fit a 7200rpm hard drive which could operate at a lower rpm (say 4200) when on batteries to save power - how cool would that be?)
* screen update (higher resolution, 1440x1024 or whatever)
* graphics card upgrade

my credit card is ready so come on apple, don't disappoint me!

I'm with ya on this. It would be great if we could have that sort of update - or ANY sort of update at this point. However, all we can do is wish and hope; even the rumor sites have been silent concerning a Powerbook update. Everyone is so wrapped up in all things iPod and iTunes that ALL of Apple's other more substantial hardware is falling by the wayside, and I'm a little irked by that.

With Jobs not giving a keynote, don't hold your breath.

This is true. The last update was not "announced" it just appeared on a Tuesday morning after Macworld last January

If there is no keynote, I can't see a widescreen 12" or a higher res 17" announced at the show. He'd want to take the stage for that. I could see speed bumps (1.6/1.8 with 200mhz bus using a 7448), but that's about it.

At this point, I think it's more likely that it will come later.

The 7448 looks like just a speed bump, but it is actually more than that. Of course it is not a G5 class processor, but apart the higher clocked bus, reading its specifications reveals that: (1) there are more power saving benefits from newer manufacturing technology (2) it has double the L2 cache of the previous 7447 (3) it has OOOE capabilities for vector instructions.

This would be a nice curtain to close the PPC scene for the Powerbooks.

I agree completely! I really hope, and I'm holding out, for the 7448.

One wonders if there is an update, if it'll qualify for the Student Union iPod offer.
I can't see why not, unless they change the name and call them something like "Powerbook PC" to skirt around the Powerbook moniker.
Of course by then, all stock of the mini iPod may have been depleted.

Do you really think Apple will release another PPC Laptop after all the Intel talk and disapointments with no PB G5s? I really dont know, but really?

Yes, with no x86 OS X in near future, no PentiumBooks..
How can a boring thing such as a mac or a PC be so exciting??

i hope they revise the powerbooks at Paris

i'd like one for college
2 button mouse, card reader, and a 12 inch wide screen is all i want that the current pbg4 lacks

i doubt any of that will come though

cheers to wishful thinking
