Changing default splash screen in Leopard

I found these instructions but the terminal command comes back with directory doesn't exist.
I renamed the picture I wanted to use to DefaultDesktop.jpg and used it to replace the one located in System/Library/CoreServices and now my splash screen is blue.
I also tried this program, but to no avail.
So, what am I doing wrong?

It has to be JPG formatted, not just named DefaultDesktop.jpg. Open it in Preview and save it as a JPEG to make sure.

worked easily for me (and has on all my macs).
are you SURE it's a jpg? (not just named .jpg?).
try making another .jpg. delete the DefaultDesktop.jpg in coreservices. replace with yours. reboot.
should work...
