Brushed metal is very ugly. I doubt that a petition would help though. Someone at Apple seems to like it since practically everything is brushed metal meanwhile.

I actually like the metal look...
But I also like Cheese Whiz & Spam, so my opinions don't go very far.

Actually, when you click on the hide toolbar button on the right, the metal-theme disappears.
Well, only for that window.

If Apple hasn't changed things by this late-beta stage, they're not about to suddenly revert just because some people signed an online petition.
Besides, how many of these people have used Panther yet? I haven't, and I'm sure most of them haven't either. They might end up liking the Finder (even if just for the features) once they get to know it.

Petition???
I guess I'm not in touch with my artistic side. If you've got beef with brushed metal, then change it.
Skins exist for X. (search the forums, there was a recent post linking to some NICE ones).
Geesh.

I do care about the Mac OS and I think the brushed metal is the best new feature of the Finder, I love it.

the interface is much better and yes I too think brushed metal sucks and have tried to convert all my apps to aqua then I thought, what's the point?
One thing that would be nice is a over haul of the brushed metal look. I know it has been covered many times but the old music player in PB.

I hate brushed metal in everything but iCal and iTunes. I use Safari in Aqua mode. However I must say that I think that the Finder's browser though looks quite good in their metal. Further even Aqua is a tad bit more "metallic" in appearance in Panther.

1) Brushed metal MATCHES THE G5s and the Powerbooks.
2) It's just a theme, kids.
3) Yes I meant "kids". You guys choose to whine over the most trivial things. Here we have a beautiful Operating System, beautiful machines, and a company that we love; yet you dorks choose to whine about the freakin' theme?
Get a theme, dudes. Stop acting like such high maintenance PC losers.

Exactly, these are the same people that moaned about the smiley face disappearing on startup.

Not a fan of over-using metal in apps, but I really do like the new Panther Aqua; duller stripes, darker grey, and now text appears legible, and clear. It also makes the interface much more interesting without detracting from it. Still, I love Jaguar's stripes too, but Panther is much nicer.
If you fire up mail, or something like console, the toolbar and icons look really good together now, more sort of blended in. I wish they would flatten the pop-up, and pull-down buttons, cause they tend to stick out too much now.

Can anyone attest to the performance of the Finder window resizing in later versions of Panther? In DP1 metal Finder windows reverted back to the performance of, say, resizing an iPhoto window.
Beyond the fact that Apple is violating its own UI guidelines going metal seems to have significantly DECREASED performance of the most basic element of Finder windows.

7B74's Finder Window Resizing is noticeable faster than Jaguar's.

Yes, if little changes on Earth would cause that much stress to me like brushed metal seems to cause to some people here I would not have time to write this post

When somebody decided that petitions were too effective and they should be reduced to the political equivalent of a guestbook.
Right on, online petitions hold as much water as a thimble... legally, there is no impetus for a company to even acknowledge the petition.

I like more the panther aqua (jaguar aqua sucks) than metal! Apple should make two systemwide themes for panther one for aqua and one for metal....
So everybody would be happy :-)
I signed the petition....

Hey when does MacNN gets rid of the pinstripes here and goes brushed metal?
And how can I start a petition for it?

I hope they never go brushed metal. This is one of the problems of brushed metal it looks just too heavy. Have a look at the .Mac page for an example. It feels uncomfortable. Like staring at a big metal sheet at 20 cm distance. Wo does that? We feel more comfortable looking into the distance. That's more brighter and bluer colors with regard to color perspective.

Aqua has always seemed so light to me instead of the heavy grays of previous operating systems (and now, sadly, 10.3), and, as you said, very comfortable to look at.

I can't say that staring at an almost white, pinstriped screen makes me feel better. The problem I have with the current Aqua theme is that it is too bright and has too much contrast to normal contents. Platinum was nice for its light shade of grey.
The stripes or the brushed metal are just textures for me. I can't say that I find the brushed structure less obtrusive than the stripes, but I like that it's not that white.

The pinstripes in the 10.3 Aqua are MUCH more subtle than in 10.2. To me, who doesn't like the pinstripes at all in 10.2, they're not an issue with 10.3, at least as far as what I've seen in screenies. The brushed-metal apps seem so much clunkier with all the space around windows, and no visible spearation of the title bar at the top.
The petition might be pointless, but I've submitted feedback to Apple that at the very least, they let people choose between Brushed and Aqua, as is their wont. All it takes is two measly radio buttons.

Not having a copy of Panther handy to play with, can you guys with Panther answer a question regarding this:
In Panther, does the brushed metal go visibly translucent when the window is not selected?
The more I use Safari in Jaguar, especially with two screens, the more I really hate that I can't tell at a glance which window is selected like I can with the Aqua theme. The selected Aqua window turns opaque white versus the translucent gray of the other windows. But now that 1/3 of my windows are brushed metal, which has no visible difference when selected, I cannot just glance at a screen and tell where the focus is.
I absolutely HATE that... to me that's a major GUI deficiency... even Windoze pathetic GUI gets that important piece of functionality better than the Jaguar with brushed metal introduced!! Ack!

They are making Aqua more colored like Platinum. This is a step in the right direction. Esp for designers.
