For some reason, I've been under the impression that I could split up a partion without wiping the entire drive that the partition was on. I have a 15 gig partion on a 100 gig drive, that I'd like to cut up into several others.

I'd like to be able to split this 15 gig up without needing to format the whole drive.

I couldn't see how to do this with the drive tools that come with OS X. Is there a 3rd party solution for this?

I've been looking for one for years. You could do it on the PC, why not on the Mac? If anyone has a way to repartition a "live" partition, please let us know.

I think you can stop looking for a way to do this.

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

I don't think there are any programs that
will let you do that for the mac.

Then again you probably wouldn't use it
because it would be a little too risky
I think.

I've been doing it on the PC for years. Never lost any data doing so. Why can't you do it on the Mac?

There's no "Ghost"-type app either. Yes, there's "Carbon Copy" but that's drive-to-drive, not drive-to-file.

it only runs in os 9 at the moment so those with the newer hardware are out of luck but FWB Partition Toolkit may be what you are after. Supposedly there is an X version in the works too....

For what it is worth, this is technically possible -- it just isn't easy to write, and no one has stepped up to implement such a thing under Mac OS X.

Not even Ambrosia?

I've been asking around for ages for something like this. Haven't found anything like it yet...

Yep. I think FWB pre-annouced an OSX verion of Partition Toolkit at the show. It should be shipping anyday now.

THERE IS SOMETHING THAT ALLOWS YOU TO DO THIS!!!!! FWB Makes a program call Partition toolkit. You need to boot from an OS 9 startup disk do use it but it works. I've used it several times.

Check it out...http://fwb.com/html/partition_toolkit.html

I DO!

Disk Utility won't work if the drive's over 2GB. It bitches that it won't continue. It won't span, either.

The current version of Partition Toolkit doesn't support FireWire drives and it cannot expand a partition. I was told by one of the FWB engineers the next version will support OS X, FireWire drives, and expanding a partition.

Dude, no Mac user needs any Linux tools to format any disk. But unfortunately that's entirely and 100% NOT the point.

This is about re-partitioning an not about partitioning.

I see no way that I could take an existing HFS+ disk and re-partition it with Linux tools without losing any data...
