So is it going to be a free upgrade or a new OS?

Both.

Free download (if you have time or DSL - and time online is near free) or $20 upgrade CD. Also a full 9.1 CD $99. And the upgrade CD comes with purchases of the Apple Pro Keyboard.

It was spelled out on MacNN front page and AppleInsider last week.

I don't know if it's an international word but it refers to someone who acts like he knows everything but in the end is on the same level as the average ......

get my drift....

hey, people, we have a new international word!

tobster: i think [what cipher said] was that you need @ least OS9 before you can climb that ladder. if you're running on OS8.6 say, you're just not going to be able to make the jump.

and for the record, cipher is usually right. but aren't we all besserwissers anyway?

How about because if you don't have OS9, its a little hard to upgrade to 9.1??
Good enough reason?
Hell if you have OS 8 download it and try and update to 9.1. GO FOR YOUR LIFE.
Asshole.

i'm onto this:

Misha: we need a whole room to keep all besserwissers in. can we open a page purely dedicated to all the besserwissers of the world. could be informative.

Just about this besserwisser thing: Besserwisser is German and actually means better-knower (besser=better, wissen=knowledge). I guess it's normally reffered to as "smart ass". BTW, the plural is not besserwissers (as if it were an English word), but just besserwisser. I've never heard it in an English conversation; is this really an international word?

Hey you never know, besserwisser could be a complimentary term our Icelandic friend misused in the course of trying (and failing) to insult me...

cipher:

i didn't mean what you thought i meant: just some slightly intoxicated ******** and it's probably time i went to bed: must say i've enjoyed the lunacy from all.

to scl, and non-native english users:

it's difficult for 'native english' users not to put an 's' on the end of something we want to pluralise or attribute [there are tricky exceptions].

it's one of the nitpicking little things that probably make english difficult to use. so where besserwisser [or more of them] is concerned, it just comes naturally to put an 's' on the end.

am definately not trying to be a besserwisser about this: just trying to help.

ps: i type in a common word in 'australian' and it comes up immediately as ********. that's quick.

posthumanus over.

It's nice to see that Cipher took this as an insult from since it was surely not intended to go down that road. Seems like it in other threads that he decides people are out to get him ALL the time. My sincerest apologies if YOU DECIDED to take this as an insult. But like posthumanus said - we are all besserwissers. He couldn't be more right. Cipher, go and **** off if that helps you let off steam - if not then don't take your childhood sadness out on an innocent teddybear from Iceland.

Uttermost respect, Tobbi

okay:

let's all be nice here.

tobster: if you're going to call someone names, please make sure they're icelandic first so they know what you mean.

cipher: maybe you were too quick to bite.

me: hell, cipher. we almost got into a fight and we're from the same country! sometimes the slightest word can be misconstrued.

so let's all be nice and come back tomorrow as friends.

posthumanus.

Merry Cherry from asia:

bet you never thought this thread would go all around the world and end up with a fight between besserwisser[s].

as for 9.1? it's probably free as download if you have at least OS9. we'll know everything in a couple of days.

posthumanus out.

Supposed to be a free download (like 72 MB in size though). Thank god for a Job with T-1 access but good luck even getting onto the apple site tomorrow. And as Cipher said unless you have OS 9 it really will be a waste of time downloading it.

There should be a full upgrade CD available as-well for those that haven't jumped up to 9x yet.

If I recall last July's expo the site was tied-up for almost the whole day, probably also due to the revisions they had to make to post all thier new products. Now with everyone wanting to d-load the update, it'll probably be tied-up for the whole week

I wonder what the "deal" will be for someone who bought (or buys) a new Mac with OS9 installed. Will they offer a free upgrade to 9.1 at the time of purchase? That seemed to be standard procedure in the past.
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Yonkers can have better TV reception.

Hm... ok, well, which bloody road did you expect it to go down?
I have little patience and a short temper, so if you don't say anything that can be misinterpreted in that way, then there will not be a problem.
Nothing to do with sadness dude, I had a very happy childhood.
Just remember you started this in the first place.

Explain and back up the bolded statement and I'll be able to forgive and forget.

Not until Apple offer 9 as a free download, which won't be for a long time.
OS 8 isn't free yet - I believe 7 is.

Hi All

If you want to try this word 'besserwisser' out, I should let you Know that the correct pronunciation is bare-sa-vissa.

And it does indeed mean Smart-Arse.

I guess that makes me one! ( though not judging by my phonetics )
although the very fact that I know the word phonetics.......
