Even by the standards of TV Guide's non-articles, that list was lame. It simply doesn't make sense to take characters created in comic strips, comic books, movies, and TV and throw them all into one list. Do that and you end up with absurdities like Angelica from RugRats being "greater" (whatever that means exactly) than Charlie Brown, or Superman, one of the most popular characters of the 20th century, at #39, coming in two spots behind one of his least imaginative imitations, Mighty Mouse.

OK, so I take these things a little too seriously. But it would've been far more interesting and sensible if they'd confined themselves to just TV animation. It would at least leave room for some noteworthy characters who otherwise got left out (Race Bannon comes to mind). Of course the list would then be dominated largely by lame Hannah-Barbera crap, but that's TV for you.
Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them.

Since I'm leaving work in a few minutes and have nothing to do until then, here is my list of the 50 greatest characters, confined only to characters created for television. In cases of "duo" characters, I played it by ear: sometimes I separated them, sometimes I dropped the straight man altogether, and sometimes the characters are so inextricably linked I had to keep them together. With that, here is my list:

1. Homer Simpson
2. Fat Albert
3. Bullwinkle
4. Ren & Stimpy
5. Butt-head
6. Bart Simpson
7. Fred Flintstone
8. SpongeBob SquarePants
9. Shaggy
10. Speed Racer
11. Scooby-Doo
12. Race Bannon
13. Goliath
14. C. Montgomery Burns
15. The Powerpuff Girls
16. Beany & Cecil
17. Deputy Dawg
18. Stewie Griffin
19. Danger Mouse
20. Cartman
21. Angelica Pickles
22. Yogi Bear
23. Lisa Simpson
24. Brian Griffin
25. Beavis
26. Barney Rubble
27. Bender
28. Gumby
29. Arthur
30. Brak
31. Krusty the Clown
32. Duckman
33. Space Ghost
34. Underdog
35. Atom Ant
36. Squidward
37. Hadji
38. Inspector Gadget
39. Bobby Hill
40. George of the Jungle
41. Samurai Jack
42. Josie and the Pussycats
43. Tennessee Tuxedo
44. Daria Morgendorfer
45. Cotton Hill
46. Boris Badenov & Natasha Fatale
47. Dexter
48. Ricochet Rabbit
49. Ace and Gary (The Ambiguously Gay Duo)
50. Mojo Jojo

If I included any non-TV characters, please correct me. (If I omitted anyone's favorite, that was probably the reason.)

Batfink -- i've only met 2 other people that remember seeing it, but it's one of my favorites of all time.

Secret Squirrel -- apparently there are new episodes, but as usual they suck when compared to the original. the voices were so great "hmm hmmmm, yellow pinky.."

Hong Kong Phooey --brother was righteous!

I hate to admit it, but I love CatDog. It's almost distrurbing watching that cartoon - it's so stupid, yet mindbending. A cat, a dog, they're frickin attached maaaaaan!

But from the list I have to pick Bugs Bunny.

Of all the talented and skilled animated actors, Bugs has set the standard for all we know and love today in a good cartoon. Everything - a quick thinker with the fast talk, the fast costume changes, the physical deformations and multiple gunshot wound ability - including direct cannon ball hits, physical combustion (pyrotechnic and matter/anti-matter) and on and on...

I wonder if he'll do the talk show route, or maybe just the usual interview from his Beverly Hills hole?...

Kind of a credability test. Bugs Bunny is the best cartoon character ever, especially if you limit the sample to the period from 1940 to 1960.

The ones I eliminated from the list you posted are ones I can do without, especially "Scooby Doo", who was always awful. Scooby makes Cartman look like a good character, not that Cartman needs Scooby's help.

Most of the time when I watched cartoons as a kid, I was existing through the filler cartoons, just waiting for the next BB one. Not much beats the "Rabbit of Seville", for instance. God, but that is awsome.

I'd add "Stan & Kyle" from South Park, maybe some of the characters from "Wizards", and definitely the girl from "Heavy Metal". I don't know if movie characters qualify, though.

By the way, doesn't Bullwinkle trying to pull a rabbit out of a hat sound like a software developer, in a way?

As far as South Park goes, Kenny should also be on the list. Granted the shows creators eventually got sick of him and killed him off for the last time, he was the best running joke on the show. The only cartoon character I've ever seen on TV that used foul language without being censored (if you could understand what he was saying), in addition to being killed and torn apart by rats every episode.

And as far as The Simpsons goes, just about every recurring character on the show should be on the list.

She's the biggest reason why girls like Bebop, as far as I gather anyway...I have friends who cried when Ed left! (compared to Spike at the end...when Fay didn't even cry for him though she loved him...)

It's too hard to make a top 50 for american cartoons though...at least for me ^_^; I can only name like 20...

1) Homer
2) Bugs Bunny
3) Bender
4) Bart
5) Cartman
6) Fry
7) Kenny
8) Warner Brothers & Warner Sister - Dot
9) Batman
10) Wolverine
11) Sylvester & Tweety
12) Daffy Duck
13) Power Puff Girls
14) Dexter
15) Storm
16) Donald Duck
17) Elroy Jetson
18) Fred Flinstone
19) Magneto
20) Bevis & Butthead
(that's all I like w/o Old School Disney & Pixar)

wow...29 girls, 19 guys, a mechanical cat, and a hamster...the girl vs. guy ratio was closer than I expected @_@ (On 2nd thought, Rosso should replace Mononoke in that list...the flying pig is much more adorable than the wolf-raised princess...so that makes 28:20)

Seems the opposite of American cartoons though...where guys are more offensive/funny/@ss whooping in cartoons...

The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, which appropriately takes its place in history immediately adjacent to The Family Circus (at least on this list).

Jim Rockford was beaten repeatedly for your entertainment.

Not a fan of the Manga guy (UY, Ranma, Inuyasha), but you are right, Lum should be there, probably replacing Nancy from RoD...and bumped up above Lina Inverse.

Even by the standards of TV Guide's non-articles, that list was lame. It simply doesn't make sense to take characters created in comic strips,
What's the name of the magazine again?

NO WAY that Spongebob should be ahead of Mickey. Though Spongebob is popular right now, he hasn't stood the test of time, in my opinion, to be ahead of Mickey, Porky, etc. Not that I'm a big Mickey fan, but it's the principle.
Oh, and Charlie Brown (w/Snoopy) should be in the top 3.
Homer Simpson, a sentimental favorite of mine, is in a pretty good spot, though

It's not a real list. It's designed to be controversial (as far as cartoon rankings can be controversial).

I don't see Super Chicken anywhere.

Or Danger Mouse.

But I ain't falling for it.

(Purges from memory).

Missed this when it was originally posted.

Even if I were including characters created for theatrical cartoons, I wouldn't include Speedy, who's the most irritating character to come out of the Warner stable. Those later cartoons they did with him and Daffy should be destroyed and all memory of them expunged. I would include Taz with great reluctance--he's not funny or interesting, but he's probably been the subject of more starter tattoos than any character in history, and you've got to respect that in a weird sort of way.

Actually, if I were listing theatrical characters only, I would probably put Daffy Duck at the top of the list; I think he's funnier than Bugs, who's often too smug by half (esp. in Chuck Jones' hands).
