It's not that bad, but he could have gone to the bathroom to do it. It depends on how bad it is really—a quiet sniffle can't cause too much harm, but a huge chunk-filled snort should be taken care of in the bathroom. But either way, you'll live.

I was dining out with my wife at a very nice Spanish Resaurant and this guy takes a linen napkin and blows his nose in it, quite vigorously. At that moment our first course of mini-courses arrives. (Sauteed Portobello Mushrooms)...

I was livid.

Also, if I was out on a first date or something, then no, but generally as long as it's not the entire contents of your head coming out of your nose, then I don't see why not.

I'm a med student, so runny noses don't bother me.

When people blow their noses on the tablecloth, however...

I'm kind of in the middle. I've done it at a restaurant before. Most of the time I go to the restroom, though. Depends on the "blowage" needed, I guess. If I've done it at the table, it wasn't too bad, and I either leaned away from the table towards the wall, or face down in my lap and let 'er rip. I don't think it's a big deal though—the sound of someone else doing it in a restaurant don't particularly bother me.

A tiny, barely noticeable one, fine. Anything that makes noise, take it to the restroom.

I wouldn't do it, that's frickin disgusting.

But what's worse are the people who feel obliged to blow their nose using the 'one finger over the nostril & letting it fly' method without using a tissue or hanky. THAT'S GROSS.

The only way I'd blow my nose at a restaraunt table is if you were at the restaraunt

As far as I know this complete disgust over nose blowing thing is an American thing. Elsewhere blowing (so to speak) in public is fine.

its a natural function, a natural reaction, i'm not going to hold my snot in to scurry to the restroom because some poor sap can't "handle" the "horribleness" of blowing your nose.

unfortunately when I get a bad sinus infection stuff like that happens it's horrible when you're in the middle of eating something and your sinusses decide to screw up on you.. >_< if you think it ruins your own appetite it does wonders for my own lol.

I would think it would depend on how bad of a snot problem it was (like others have said)
and what restaurant you are in. If it's a nice restaurant, jacket required and such then it would be a definite no-no. If it's Mcdonalds... go for it, most of the workers don't wash their hands anyway so why worry about germs, or bad manners?

AFAIK, in Japan it's a bad, bad thing, too. Even continued out-of-control sniffing seems to be more dignified than a public ejection of the offending semi-solids.

I wouldn't even think about doing it at the table.

To the bathroom, with me.

I actually just thought about this yesterday. I was at a semi fast food lunch spot and my nose was runny from the spicy food I was eating. I didn't want to sit there and sniffle the whole time, so I blew my nose. On most circumstances I think it would be rude but:

This restaurant was for quick lunches.
The napkins were paper, like a fast food place.
I was eating outside.

Had the napkin been cloth, there is no way I would blow my nose in it. So I guess it really depends on the texture of the booger recipient.

If the urge to sneeze occurred, yes I would blow my nose using a napkin.

im not talking an "urge to sneeze". in that situation, you obviously cover your mouth and nose with whatevers available so you dont disgust your fellow tablemates, guests, etc.

im talking flat out blowing your nose at a table. whether softly, loudly, wet, honked, whatever. its damned gross.

I suffer from hay fever. If I ran to the bathroom every time I had to blow my nose, I'd spend all of dinner there. Or I'd sit at the table with snot running down my face. So yes, I blow my nose in restaurants when necessary.

i would blow it at the table if it wasn't going be loud and juicy. but i'd take hearing that to having to sit in or near the smoking section.
