Looks like MSN for the Mac is not the crippled cousin anymore, because Messenger 3.0 has it all.
From Maccentral:
</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Geneva, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif">quote:</font><hr /><font size="1" face="Geneva, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif"> MSN Messenger 3.0 for Mac OS X provides new features such as the ability to transfer files to people in the user's Buddy List; organize contacts in groups; resize toolbars and icons; the ability to Import and export contact lists; and improved emoticon support.

With Messenger 3.0 users also have access to common tasks and functions directly from the Dock including signing out of MSN Messenger; changing their status; transferring files; going directly to the MSN Home Page and Hotmail Inbox; and viewing their contact list. </font><hr /></blockquote><font size="1" face="Geneva, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif">

OOOahhhh... antialiased text! even without 10.1.5... coolness.
Looks good. a great update. tho i hardly use MSN, so...

UI is bulky compared to proteus, and proteus is multi-format.

I just tried it out. When I read the article I was excited but now

This is the most horrible app I have ever seen <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

I wish there was a puke smily

This is the first time Microsoft surprises me. Now I'm reassured that they're actually working on updating their existing products.

Wow, Microsoft actually did good w/ this version. They even took advantage of the dock contextual menu too! What would be nice though, it have a toggle toolbar button thing, so the add/send/send file/etc. stuff could be hidden until needed. and at least they let you resize it down to a smaller size than version 2.0

I'm pleasantly surprised by this release

Urgh! If I wanted ugly overdone interfaces, I'd by a PC. I'm sticking with Proteus. I can live without file transfer and seeing who's typing what at the moment. It still bounces its icon which is annoying, and it's MASSIVE! I need all my 1024 x 768 pixels!

One good thing for me that wasn't there with previous versions is that I can type Japanese to Windows users and they can see it. Couldn't do that before.

I really hate MSN Messenger. Adium all the way. Nice and compact for my tiny iMac screen <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> . And it looks so cool (although the icon is kinda ugly). And a bird? WTF?
In vino veritas.

Hmmm I just found out you can change all the fonts in this version.
First thing I did was to get rid of that ugly font and set it to Lucida Grande

It's a very good improvement, but...

It is huge even on 1280x1024 I think it's to big and... Who designed that bloody UGLY interface, it's Aqua on steroids so I actually still prefer Proteus until there is a history function available for MSN Messenger.

i think this is probably the best update that i've ever been able to use from MS. (i've never had a copy of office)

HOWEVER did that 'Send' button really have to be so big. I look at that interface as a nice reminder of why i'm not using Windows . But the file transfer is nice, as is the Dock menu. This is the first big app developer that i've seen using these menus ie of the Adobe, MS, Macromedia etc.

I do have and kinda like Proteus but then i do have some issues with it which keeps me in MSN

MS wants to let us believe we're using XP instead of X

or: in the development of this version, somebody added a letter P where it shouldn't have been....

I just tried it with Chinese, and it worked flawlessly. I don't normally use MSN though, so it doesn't really affect me. What I want to know is, will iChat be capable of this?? Is this a network-dependent capability or an app-dependent one? I hope that AOL/iChat will allow this in the near future!

Wow... it's even SLOWER now.. god.. and I tought nothing could be slow than the original carbon msn.. I'm sure the interface will please everyone but die hard mac fans.. The live toolbar resizing is *mecca-elite* ( wow.. eliter than cocoa NSToolbar mb ,altough it lacks proper resizing code ( the icons arent antialiased when resized ) how about they open source the code for that.. ah no it's MS... ) so this is pretty cool but I'll stick to fire.. but my sister ( who's not a mac geek ) will use it for sure and she'll like it and thats what important for MS. Correct me if I"m wrong.

But theres one thing that ****ES me OFF. AND IT'S THE DAMN DOCK BOUNCING THAT CANT BE TURNED OFF. DOES MS USE THEIR PRODuCTS?? THE BOUNCE HOGS MY g4 400'S CPU 50% !!! wtf is up witht that, MS. GOD

If I check the save password option it locks up on login. Rather annoying, but not a show stopper.

If you want the to make the default "Add, Send, Page, etc." icons smaller, or flat out gone, just drag with your mouse above the "My Status" box, and you can change all that by dragging up.

For example...

Regular Default View:

<img src="http://collegian.ksu.edu/rickey939/msn3big.jpg" alt=" - " />

Smaller Icon View:

<img src="http://collegian.ksu.edu/rickey939/msn3small.jpg" alt=" - " />

No Icon View:

<img src="http://collegian.ksu.edu/rickey939/msn3text.jpg" alt=" - " />

This will save those of you a few pixels on small resolutions, not alot...but at least some.

Cheers!

I actually love the look of the new MSN! Would be fun to get rid of that banner at the bottom of the contact list though.

Other than that, I'm really, really, REALLY impressed! I can't believe this is a carbon app. I know most of the app is using some custom MS GUI and not using native OS X things but in this case it's extremely well done.

I'm happy live-resizing is there. It's pretty fast at resizing...not silky smooth but fast. But then again...I tried it in the latest Jaguar build and it *is* silky smooth on it. Quartz anti-aliasing. Dock menu. Scrollwheel support. I'm amazed! All these OS X features finally exploited *plus* now we get an emoticon popup, file transfer, and other goodies.

I have to give credit where credit is due. I hate all of Microsoft's products...all the products on the PC side as well as Internet Explorer for OS X, Office v.X...you name it, I've probably said it sucked. MSN 3.0 though? Best Microsoft app I've seen yet.

see:

and the fact that it is laying is not a hack, not a trick, not a feature of MS, but just the rotate 90 degrees option of graphic converter so my post wouldn't be so long

because the contact font is huge

I can read, and if I wouldn't, I would wait for the tools reading the screen coming in Jaguar.

ans a "Send"-button which fills about a quarter of your screen is too much.

I think it's a pretty swell application - only one problem though: I have no MSN buddies, and I'm not likely to get any, seeing as how we can't use MSN Chat on a Mac. Kind of a catch-22...

ugh, what a perfect world it would be (for a day anyway) if AIM and MSN would just release their friggin' standards so we could all get along (yes I know about Fire, etc... but being able to choose between the 1st-party host apps would be soopa-spiffy).

Well, maybe some of you can be my buddies (wet puppy face)
Grrr...rawr.

I downloaded resourcerer in the hope of modifying the new MSN to my own wishes, I can replace the images by editing the image then pasting, it asks me to save, I do, but no changes have occured.

<a href="http://idisk.mac.com/dazzla2/Public/msn.jpg" target="_blank">http://idisk.mac.com/dazzla2/Public/msn.jpg</a>

Is there any other resource hacking program I could use to modify the images for MSN, I wanna make it match the theme I'm making.

Thanks.
