i'm pretty sure the one i bought is comming with jaguar... how important is it for me to put tiger on it? how hard is it to do? and what's the difference?

1) Depends on which system you have, how much memory you have and which applications you want to run.

2) It's easy.

3) Too many to list. But coming from Jaguar there are quite a few.

1. which applications require tiger? -- i'll have +1gb of memory...

2. are there any write-ups or anything?

3. what are some important ones... basically, talk me into doing it

Where did you buy your Mac? eBay? If you bought it new it will come with Tiger.

Lots of applications at least require 10.3. Like the man said, it depends on what you want to do. Listing everything that requires Panther or newer wouldn't be a very good use of time.

It shouldn't take much of a write-up. You stick in the Tiger DVD and click "Install."

Apple's got a whole part of its site devoted to that. Personally, I think it's worth upgrading just for Exposé.

Panther has Exposé, which is absolutely essential. Tiger has Spotlight, which is also hugely useful.

There are other features in Tiger that are also nice, like Dashboard. However, sometimes the nicest things are the little bits of polish and streamlining that don't get all the attention on Apple's front page. For example, if you save a document onto the Desktop in Tiger, it'll immediately appear there, whereas in Panther, the Desktop and Finder windows don't update unless you switch to the Finder. Lots of little touches like that are what make Apple's new versions more enjoyable to use, IMO.

Agree with what most everyone else has said. There are so many updates since Jaguar that checking out Apple's homepage and reading about Tiger and Panther would give you an idea.

The biggest difference between Jaguar and Tiger would be SPEED! Tiger is would be much faster on almost any hardware.

I would say that perhaps you dont absolutely need Tiger, but if your running Jaguar, you may want to update just for the sake of being up to date. I mean, upgrading isnt that expensive, and you dont want to be doing something later on down the road and say "Damn I've gotta get Tiger too?!"

And Toyin makes a very good point about speed. Do it for that, if nothing else.

yeah, i'm going to do it.... the new updates will help me out A LOT

Speed. Tiger is more nimble than Panther which was noticably snappier than Jaguar. Even on this G4-800 (1 GB RAM) the difference was clear. IMHO, it's worth moving up to Tiger if you have a G4 or G5.

Edit: One more thing, the Finder in Tiger is FAR more stable than in Jaguar or Panther if you make use of Thumbnail previews of photos/pictures.

I disagree. Exposé becomes absolutely essential once you have used it.

And Tiger's Spotlight is definitely very useful.

Id say, if you can get a great deal on Panther for under 30 $ or so, get that. Otherwise, get Tiger for future and current neat programms that will need it.

Dashboard (the Widgets) is overhyped. There may be some cool/useful ones, but no need to upgrade to Tiger for Dashboard.
