Hi all,

I'm coming from a 5G 80GB iPod Video so, could you help me with my new iPod Classic 160GB.

My question is what are the (I'm not clear on what they're called) reset, disk mode, various other operations that are operated with the SELECT key plus one of the four outer buttons? What are they and how can they be activated (i.e. 'iPod resetting', 'Disk Mode').

Please advise.

Yes, thank you BUT, with 2,500+ Google entries (and yes, I tried this already before I posted this question), I am STILL confused!! So, just plainly and simply, what do the are four MENU+(iPod outer button) functions and what do they do?

The second link I posted above gives you one combination.

Also, I assume that you've not tried googling for "iPod button combinations"?

Because the first page has a bunch of info, including this little one:
Hidden Button Combinations

AFAIK, those are the only two startup combinations there are.

Incidentally, I don't think the combinations have changed since the iPod photo.

Disk Mode: Hold Fast Forward and Rewind buttons at the same time on boot

Diagnostic Mode: Hold Menu and Center Select buttons at the same time on boot (for a number of seconds) - varies by model

The combos haven't changed since the 4G.

Incorrect.

Menu and center select buttons are "force restart" - they must usually be pressed before either Disk Mode or Diagnostic Mode are invoked.

Once the Apple screen shows, the options are

1. Menu + center select -- Disk Mode

2. Back (left button) + center select -- Diagnostic Mode.

Thanks! Although I can see Apple's point in that, to keep the novices' hands clean, they avoid explaining the heavy-duty techie tricks in the users' guide. And that's why, even as a techie myself, I had to pose the question. So, thanks for the remind.

****OH, two more refreshers needed. On my 160Gig 6th gen iPod, what function does the CENTER(Select) + Play/Pause combination do? And, how do you get out of Disk Mode? Thanks.

That combination does nothing.

Also, have you actually read any of the links posted, or do you need spoon-feeding?

Yes, I've been reading all posts BUT, between having one iPod from each generation AND key combinations which are logically surmised as well as key combos from older iPods, I was trying to exhaust all possibilities.

Apologies if I didn't make myself clear earlier:

Well, thanks for all the help. I FINALLY got my IPC 160 running but now, I've got an awkward glitch. For example, when I watch videos from a Video Playlist, if I stop the video and then navigate around to get to another menu/menu level, the iPod Classic will reset itself. This will also happen when I go through other play/navigation combinations.

Yes, everything is fine after that and I'm back to the root menu but, where are these random resets coming from?

Have you tried completely restoring it to factory settings?

To which 'Restore' operation are you referring, the function on the iPod itself or the Restore operation in iTunes? If you are referring to the iTunes app operation, I've performed that procedure and re-sync at least seven times in the last two days.

That does not bode well.

I've heard of cases where a low-level (zeroing out) format of the iPod using Disk Utility, followed by a restore, solved unsolvable problems.

Let me pose this question/theory:

Would my sync problems started from the fact that I've been using the USB-to-iPod Connector that worked on my 5th gen 80 gig iPod Video as opposed to the cable that came with this 160GB iPod Classic?

Here we go again,

If, as you're saying my iPod Video cable is defective, why would it work on my iPod Video? Wouldn't I have experienced glitches when I sync my iPod Video in the past?

It isn't.

Format the iPod.

For starters, sorry if my last reply sounded a bit irritable. My apologies. But, like I asked, if the cable is reliable, why would there be problems with my iPod Classic 160?? On that format, I have formatted the iPod at least seven times, yes, not an exaggeration, in the last three days. So, how would one more format make a difference?

**UPDATE**

As per suggested, yes, I performed another 'Restore.' After this restore, I've encountered a new glitch which, MAY shed more light on the cause of the problem.

As an experiment, although my iPod is behaving nicely since this last Restore, I wanted to test a theory--"Even though unnecessary and my iPod is not having problems, what happens if I just Reboot my iPod".

Well, I rebooted my well-behaved iPod and lo and behold, the random reboots during various levels of menu/library browsing started up again. Well, after an iTunes sync (just sync, no restore), my iPod is well-mannered again.

I hope this gives another clue as to what my iPod Classic's underlying issue is.
