I have an iBook 500 with 384MB of RAM and Mac OS 9.2.1. I want a MP3 player that does a good job of running in the background without skipping. Of the currently available players, what would you recommend?
Thanks,

Audion is my player of choice. It does well in the background while using other apps. you can get info @ http://www.panic.com
I have no issues. There are many, many faces (skins) for Audion also.

audion is he best of them all, i used 2.6 when i wasn't on os x yet, and it was a little unstable, but the site cliams 2.6.1 is more stable so i trust them
2.6.1 in os x is a pleasure yes.
if audion is too instable i would recommend soundjam

I'd say iTunes. Its great. It imports cd's, burns cd's, plays mp3's, and its free.

Audion is the best; version 1.5.
Not 2.x, 1.5. Nothing compares to it.
Other than that... SoundJam MP and iTunes 2 are nice.

I'd say iTunes 2. Plus all the little bonus features you get (burning, ripping, etc).
If only Windows Media 7 was on the Mac side what it is on the PC side, the world would be a better place. But then again, we're talking about Micro$oft here.

SoundJam was the best.
Sine it hasn't been updated for quite some time, and seeing as its orignal master programmer is now employed by Apple to create iTunes, I would suggest ITunes 2.
I use iTunes 2 myself, with 4.5 GB of SoundJam-encoded files that work just fine.

I don't recommend iTunes 2.0.x. It skips and crackles constantly, especially while surfing.

Not for me... but Audion is the most rock solid of all.

What are your specs, and is VM on?
Sounds to me like a simple memory issue.

Never had that problem. How much RAM did you give iTunes?

If you don't have a great setup, stick with SoundJam. You can load songs into ram so there are NO skips...
