so my 15 inch albook fell off my desk today and now the lcd is smashed. the computer works just fine when connected to an external display. i have no idea what to do now. i hear replacing the screen costs around a thousand dollars which seems ridiculous to me when i could replace this computer for 1500 from the apple refurb store. is there anything i can do? is this estimate accurate? could i sell it for parts? someone help. even if i could get a few hundred for it i'd be satisfied.

are those guys fairly reputable? it seems like a good route, i just don't want to send them my powerbook and have it dissappear.

You could also check eBay. I just did a quick search and found a few Aluminium 15" LCDs for around $350.

I've done business with DTT before -- they fixed my Pismo several years ago. I dropped my Pismo off at their place in Fremont. It's a small shop, but they did very good work.

Uh, yeah, powerbookguy is $1000 for the LCD and housing (which is likely dented and needs replacement), for a USED LCD. Apple is $1300 for a new one, installed.

Dttservice is JUST the LCD panel -- not the housing, making it largely useless.

You can't really do a lot better than Apple's price, for a new screen. I agree that Apple's price is very high (it's part of the "tiered pricing" strategy, which means that if anything else were broken, it would also be covered for the same $1297).

just buy a new one and sell the smashed one on ebay. you will always find a wierdo wanting some parts or even changing the screen himself.

how would i know if i need just the lcd or the lcd with housing. basically the screen is cracked and it has various color bursts all around the screen and a large chunk of the screen is all opaque white.

it sounds like the LCD is all you need. The housing would need to be replaced if it is warped/bent, etc. Does the backlight work? does the screen still respond to the brightness controls?

the backlight still works, as do the brightness controls. dtts will do the repair for $550 installed from what it seems like.
