It depends on what you want to do with it. For heavy video/photo editing, layout, etc. where you need extra horsepower or a lot of screen space, go for the PM.
If you want portability, go for a laptop (Powerbook if you can afford it, iBook if you want to save a few $).

If you don't need the DP horsepower now then don't get it now. Technology chnages so much that by the time you need the extra power you may find that the DP machine is really not the best choice (the newer software may be optimized for the G5, G6s may be out and the G5s have gone to firesale pricing...whatever). Additionally, you never know what kind of machine you may need. Three years ago I used my Mac for VERY heavy graphics and animation. Today I am primarily a writer and don't use anything much morte demanding than Word or Excel.
If you only have $2K to spend you might look at a fully loaded eMac as well, You can walk away with a 1.33 ghz eMac with 1gb RAM, 160gb HD, airport extreme, bluetooth and a stand for about $1500 leaving you a little money for some software.
BTW, I have done video editing in Final Cut Pro on a 400mhz G4 tower and a 40mhz G3 iMac (so I would think ANY of the new Mac offerings will do just fine).
Good luck

I would say just get an ibook now, save your money, and in a year or two get a newer more powerful mac.

That's what I say as well. The PM G4 is so last year technology wise, and the G5 is going 2x3 GHz by the fall according to the roadmap. The PM G4 might seem like a nice deal right now, but not in 6 months. Apple is climbing like a rocket performance wise now compared to the previous years. The eMac is the best path now for the desktop if you can live with it for a couple of years and later spend your money on something more serious IMO. Or you can just go for an Apple portable, or wait for the next G5 revision.

I guess it makes a difference what you want out of a computer. A dual G4 is a lot faster than any laptop, but you can't sit on the couch and surf the wen with a Dual G4 tower on your lap.
Personally, since I started using a laptop I don' think I could go back to a desktop. The convenince of a portable far outweighs the performance penalty for what I need a computer for.
