Anyone else get optical migraines?

I got up in the middle of the night (3:00 AM) to give a sick Yorkie puppy some medication (he is hypoglycemic and suffers from seizures which is why I have him - the kennel was going to euthanize him for being tiny and sick) and I noticed that I can hardly see. It starts out with just having a hard time focusing and then I can't make out words very well - it's like a piece of my field of vision is missing.

Next thing that happens is that I notice a small squiggle C-shaped line in the middle of my vision that looks like running water. Slowly it gets bigger and bigger until I can't see anything at all except light and dark and my entire field of vision is nothing but a pulsating blob.

Then it starts to go away (about 30 minutes later) and when it does I get I get my eyesight back but I also get a whopping migraine.

Right now I have a little C that is getting bigger and bigger and can barely focus so I'd better go.

My usual "fix" for this is to take 2 extra strength motrin and drink Coke or Pepsi with sugar. Used to take Imitrex and it never worked well enough. I did that but I can feel the migraine starting already. The only other thing I do is take Darvocet if the pain is bad enough. I hate these migraines.

This time it's really bad.

Any of you have experience with this and what do you do?

Well, eyesight is back and don't have a headache yet...took the usual two extra strength Motrin and drank a glass of Pepsi. I remember there being a thread back a while about bad headaches and what people did for them.

But, I do have an upset stomach and feel like my head has pressure in it.

Guess I'll go back to bed.

Ocular migraines? I get them (very infrequently). I do what you do, take some extra-strenth pain killers and drink something caffeinated. If I can I usually sit in a dim or dark room and try to relax, and the episode is over in about a half hour.

I got one while driving once. I pulled into a parking lot and waited for it to pass, then drove home with a splitting headache. Good times.

Did this just start? You've never had this happen before? I hope you've seen or will see a physician soon.

Hope it's nothing serious. Best wishes.

Are you sure it's not a detatched retina? That can be fixed.

I used to just get that when I was young, and always wanted to know where it came from.

My friend Kirstin used to have terrible terrible migraines...

The big issue was that for a while she had to take injections at
home that her now-ex husband helped her with but that still
didn't really help.

After a while she mentioned to her doctor that she'd heard
of Botox injections helped some migraine patients, could he
get her involved in a test program to verify if it would work
for her?

After a time this happened and believe it or not, she can
work her job, do things with people again and even
attend concerts and everything.

So, talk to your doctor. If your migraines are as crippling for
you as they were for my friend it might be worth looking at.

I get migraines now and then. I normally have to take about 4 800mg motrin or 3 aleve to have any affect. If I don't kill it right away, I end up in the ER. One time, while on deployment aboard the Enterprise, I got one so bad it woke me up. I had to have two security guys almost carry me down to medical. I ended up in the ward for two days. Not very pleasant, especially when it was chow time, my berthing was off the mess decks, and they were packed. I remember everyone looking at me...

ocular migraines are no fun. next time i'd suggest putting down the keyboard immediately when you're having one. staring at a monitor doesn't help at all.
last time i had a severe one i could barely think straight, let alone type.

Thank you, Demonhood. You're right.

I have my eyesight back but it's not 100%. My head has a pressure in it. I've been trying to sleep, but it's not helping. Blegh.

I get these to from time to time. They are few and far between and there is little I can do except wait for it to pass. I have no idea why this happens but it sure is uncomfortable.

I too get these though (fortunately) not very often. I don't find them uncomfortable whilst in the 'sight' stage of the migraine - just really annoying as I can't see a thing until it has passed.

I blame mine on stress and high blood pressure and too much computer use. Years back I happened to have one whilst shopping and so I went to the nearest optometrist to see if there was anything happening inside my eyes. They said they couldn't see anything - I said "that makes two of us".

Keep us informed if you find out anything further

Not to scare you but you might want to check out this link ...

http://www.ihrfoundation.org/default.asp

Increased Intracranial Hypertension is a build up of cerebral spinal fluid around the brain which causes headaches and vision problems. My wife was diagnosed last month after suffering from terrible headaches for months. It's pretty rare but what you are describing sounds very familiar.

Yes, it's stress simonjames.

I am really behind on some work that I wanted to have done by this weekend and it's not finished. It's now almost 2:00 AM and I can't sleep and I'm up trying to get work done. I'm getting a chest cold also.

I think I'll try to find something to snack on and go to sleep.

Stress tends to make you more susceptible to migranes. Fatigue does as well. Being poorly nourished (you need those vitamins and minerals!) can be a factor too.

So...

SEE YOUR DOCTOR RIGHT AWAY. Anything that affects your vision is a BAD THING™ and should be checked out IMMEDIATELY.

Have concern for someone’s vision, and suddenly you’re wdlove? That kind of speaks volumes for the lack of compassion around here, that only one person is believed to have any!

WDLove doesn't come here anymore because...

A) He's sick and
B) People were mean to him for no reason.

People kind of like olePigeon.

At least you don't suffer from constant static in your vision, which the doctor has no idea of the cause.

Cody: the same thing would happen to me every now and again until I got contact lenses. In the past 5 years, I've had only two ocular migraines, and each time it happened when I hadn't been wearing my lenses.

So in my case, it's quite clear that straining to see is what causes it. I'd suggest that you go get your vision checked (if you haven't recently).

That's a great idea, Kerrigan. And kmkkid, that's a bummer about your vision.

Now I have a cold - a really bad cold or the flu. Maybe that's why I got the migraine.

Ugh.
