And what type of car?
My bmw 318i ('95, 150k miles, manual) usually gets around 24 mpg (US gallons). Last tank I only got 20 mpg, because I spent the month just going back and forth to work (about 1 mile, lots of lights and hills). Then this weekend I took a road trip with about half a tank, and decided to refill to see the highway-only mileage. 34.3! I was surprised.
What do y'all get?

89 Accord, 2.0 liter carbed 4 cylinder, 5 spd: 26-35ish. It would get a lot better, but it has a carb. Blah.
92 Accord, 2.0 liter, EFI, automatic. 26-35ish. It would get a lot better, but it has an automatic. Blah.
92 SVX: 0 mpg. I haven't driven it or even started it since August of 05.

I'm averaring around 20.5~ mpg in my '93 Park Avenue. V6 3.8, 172k miles.
I'm pretty soft on the pedal and that's close to as good as I'm able to get. My driving is around 2/3 highway, BTW.

Uh, yeah, it doesn't weigh that much, and IT IS NOT A CAR.
It's a stupid SUV, a real one, originally built for travelling offroad. Do you ever offroad with it?
I'm guessing not. Poser.

I used to get about 27-28mpg but recently I have dropped down to 22-23mpg. I drove 75% highway and now that I got my oil changed and my car runs normally hopefully my mpg will go back up.
92' Camry with 117,000 miles btw.

Don't have separate city/highway figures - driving is mixed - more stop & go/suburban than highway:
2002 BMW 330Ci convertible 5spd: about 22
2006 Mini Cooper CVT: about 28 (hoping it improves with break-in and summer gas)

It's probably more like winter gas dude. Winter gas= crappier blend, less power, less mpg. Also, your car int eh winter takes longer to warm up, all the grease/oil is thicker in lower temperatures.
If it warms up and you're still getting crap MPG check your O2 sensors, or maf sensor, something ain't right.

Assessing that the guy doesn't use his SUV offroad is fine. Calling him names is NOT fine. There's no reason to insult someone here, especially if his experience tends to prove your long-held assertion that SUVs are wasteful. We're all into "civil discourse" here, remember?
To answer the question of the thread, my wife gets around 25MPG in her Honda CRV. I get about 30 in my Civic (when my son isn't driving it-he tends to turn the engine on and just sit while he adjusts everything, wasting gas that HE will wind up paying for). One reason we stick with Hondas is that they have a well-deserved reputation for being thrifty to drive. (And we HAVE gone offroad with the CRV; even Honda says it's not a "real" SUV, but it does the job when necessary.)

So basically, you drive something that gets crap mpg, crap acceleration, crap handling, crap braking, crap safety ratings for you and your passengers, and endangers other people on the road in exchange for.... looking tough? Yeah, you are a poser, also.
In fact, you might as well drive this, at least it's a bit more honest as to what type of person you are:
And GHPorter, I am not calling names. The dictionary defines poser as "a person who habitually pretends to be something he is not". SUVs were designed for people who offroad or tow something on a regular basis. If you do neither, and you still drive an SUV, you fit that definition. If you don't like being called that, please get rid of your SUV, I'm just telling the truth here. I am not attempting to arouse anger, I'm attempting to show people that what they're doing is 'pretending', by driving a vehicle designed for traveling offroad on the road. If you could tell me a nicer way to put it, maybe I'd use that, but I really don't know how else to put it. I mean, I could say they're a ****ing idiot, a moron, a jackass who's ruining the environment for hte sake of looking cool, a dumbshit who probably yaps on their cellphone while not using turn signals, an ignorant SOB who trades safety, emissions, mpg, and decent driving performance because they're insecure about having a little dick, but no, I'm not saying any of that. I'm trying to be civil and using an appropriate word that describes people who drive 'offroad vehicles' on the road, and never offroad/tow anything. Again, if this is out of line, please explain what the hell else I'm supposed to say.

Ah. Okay. I get it. You own one, and you put your wife in one. Why did you do that? Does she offroad/tow often? Just wondering, considering the safety ratings of a honda accord are quite a bit better, especially in the femur load ratings:
http://www.automallusa.net/2002/honda/cr-v/ratings.html
http://www.automallusa.net/2003/hond...d/ratings.html
I won't even need to mention the differences in handling, braking, response, acceleration, roof intrusion, or rollovers....

You are calling names. It doesn't matter that the name fits, it's still a name. There are a lot of things a lot of people could call you and still be truthful, but they don't. Why? Live and let live. Somebody else wants to make a stupid decision? Let them.

Go ahead. SWG used to call me a redneck quite often, and the reason I got pissed isn't that he was calling me names, but that he was wrong. I hate nascar, football, SUVs, I don't live in a trailer park, bla bla bla bla. I'm pretty much the opposite. That's what annoyed me. But yeah, if the shoe fits, knock yourself out. As long as you are justified in the names you call me, I don't care.

That's the thing. Not everyone is as thick-skinned as you, so most people approach name-calling with a little bit more tact.
