Hello all. Recently a friend who is an Edmonton Oilers fan and I decided to go to the March 28th game up in Denver. The Oilers will be playing the Avalanche then. Sadly, I know next to nothing about hockey. Maybe someone could explain what happens or provide a link explaining hockey? I've only watched one game before (which was the last time the Avalanche played the Oilers).

That should be a pretty good game I imagine!

Just as an FYI, one of Colorado's big acquisitions since last year was Ryan Smyth, a gritty forward player. Well, Ryan Smyth is an Alberta homeboy, and was for years and years one of Edmonton's best players. People loved him to death because he's what's considered to be an "old-fashioned" hockey player: can't skate well, can't shoot well, can't stickhandle well, but just crashes the net with reckless abandon and "cleans up the garbage", scoring almost all his goals from within 10 feet of the net.

Anyways, last year the Oilers, for many reasons, couldn't reach a contract agreement with Smyth and being a rebuilding team decided to trade him away. It was an emotional day – Smyth was breaking down in tears in interviews, throngs of weeping fans showed up at the airport to see him off, etc. etc. He's been back to Edmonton for a few games and receives a hero's welcome.

Anyways, that won't really help you much...just giving you some background info to impress your hockey friends.

Oooh, that's just what I need thanks. I'm really excited for the game. How long do they typically last? I see how long the game is supposed to be, but at least in football, that doesn't mean much.

Pretty much the only stops in play are when a penalty is called or when the puck goes out of play (over the glass or held by the goalie), so the 20 minute periods go by relatively quickly. There's usually a full 20 minutes of intermission between the periods, though. Probably 3 hours total, with the TV stops.

when the puck (the little black thing the players are trying to get) goes into the goal (the netted thing) a point is scored. teams can even score against themselves if not careful!

Her name's Chelsi. She's 16 just like me. She drives a silly Saturn and happens to have a MacBook and no, I don't like her just because of that

Well that's nice. Maybe you and yourself should go to a hockey game. Slamming pucks into nets sounds really fun.
