I downloaded the OS 9.0.4 and DVD 2.2 updates this morning from the Apple download server (as opposed to control panel software update) and installed 9.0.4 on both my G4/500 and G3/266. The DVD 2.2 only got installed on the G4. The installiation went smooth as silk on both Macs and they are currently running with no problems.

With all of the problems I see in various posts, I thought this my experience was worth mentioning.

I agree - the 9.04 was a eonderful update for me. Did a bit of quick testing, and especially Graphics was quicker on my iMac DV.

More than half the speed losses incurred with the "upgrade" to 9.0 have been eliminated. OS 9.0.4 is 2.2% slower than 8.6, where 9.0 was 5.3% slower than 8.6. The 9.0.4 score is without removing extraneous (for me) extensions and control panels, so I suspect the final tally will be loss of 1.5-2% versus 8.6.

Now if I could be sure that Newer would stay solvent until the iMAXpowers ship (466 MHz upgrade for iMacs)�

The upgrade went wonderfully for me as well, and fixed my VST USB floppy problem (couldn't boot up my G4/500 with the floppy plugged up before the upgrade).

Put the 9.0.4 update on my G4 at work this morning...all is well!
Copied the installer (and the DVD 2.2) to a Zip and will be putting them on my iMac DV when I get home this afternoon.
This thread is encouraging...hope all goes as well on my home Mac

9.0.4 seems not only faster but way more stable than 9.0. It seems almost as speedy as 8.6 was and I am extremely happy with the update. Surprisingly I haven't found any bugs even though I run an old PowerTower 180.

I downloaded the DVD 2.2 and 9.0.4 this am as well as QT 4.1.1. Everything went well but now I'm having frequent lock-up on booting (after extensions) and QT crashes everytime (type 1 error). In addition IE 5.0 crashes after QT. THis never happened under QT 4.1 and 9.0.2. Any ideas? I don't have conflict catcher but think I might have to go get it.

Quick follow-up to previous post...
I installed OS 9.0.4, DVD 2.2 and QuickTime 4.1.1 on my DV when I got home this evening.
It's been 4-5 hours of surfing, e-mail, Illustrator, Photoshop, MP3s and one Sheryl Crow concert DVD (90 minutes...and I watched it straight through with no audio sync/stutter problems whatsoever!) and everything seems to be working like a charm (knock on wood...).
I was prepared for the worst after reading through these threads. Yikes! Sounds like most everyone is experiencing some "update weirdness" today.

Maybe I'm just a lucky guy?

I installed 9.0.4, DVD 2.2, and QT 4.1.1 on my Sawtooth G4 400. I've watched four DVD's without a single sync problem. I'm soooooo happy something finally works right with the DVD's. Makes the money worth it. No pixelation, no sync problems, what else could I ask for.

same here i got a complete upgrade with QT 4.1.1, DVD 2.2, and OS 9.0.4. The OS upgrade was great itselft. I wasn't looking for a speed difference, but just wanted stability, and got it. The DVD 2.2 created popping and cracking, but QT 4.1.1 solved it.

My G4/450 is very, very happy. In very good shape!!!

MacOS 9.0.4 did something rather incredible for me and my Powerbook G3/233. It made Java 2.2 work with Talkcity's EZTalk for the first time. No crashes, no freezes.
What's more, I could be logged into EZTalk, and Yahoo chat at the same time using Internet Explorer 5.0. The screen refreshed itself a few times during chatting, but I would rather have a shivering response than a freezing one!

9.0.4 went just fine for me on my 'beige' G3.

The OS seems to be even closer to rock solid now - a long way from the days of 7.5.3 - when you could expect three crashes per day!

9.0.4 is great....much more stable(so far)! By the way, anyone know the difference between the English-International and the English-NorthAmerican updates? I'm from North America but I accidentaly used the English-International update...work great though! :O

I went thru the looong download of OS 9.0.4 on my iMac DV only to get an error message of type -39 when I tried to open the .smi file to do the actual upgrade (I was not able to access it thru SW Update control panel). I noticed that this .smi file is only 10.5 MB in size when the download site said it was about 12.5 MB. Did I not get it all?

yeah. i have aq newer g4/350 upgrade in a power tower pro....and the 9.0.4 upgrade just killed me. doesnt want to play nice at all...... have to clean install everything. No love on the upgrade. I'm usually better than that, too....i try not to be the first to stick in a service pack....it was almost a microsoft looking thing.....they should have called 9.0.4 a service pack. thats what it has been behaving like. i still love apple though. =)
