My G3 freezes when the Norton AV extension loads. A dialogue box appears but freezes before any text text message can be displayed. After an exhaustive on-off extensions game, I found it to be the NAV extension. I turned it off in the extensions manager, and 8.6 works just fine. (Yes, it's the very latest version of NAV.)

I have experienced more system instability with both Norton and Virex 'autoprotect' extensions. They also caused no end of trouble on 8.5.1 (old and new G3s) in conjunction with an ASIP server. Numerous 'copy' hangs. Not the best solution--but all you can do is turn it off.

The NAV copy hangs on 8.5 and 8.6 can both be cured with a patch from synamtec. You can download it from their support site at http://www.symantec.com. This will take you to NAV 5.03. The startup crashes can usually be cured by removing the auto-protect extension from the extensions folder and placing it loose in the system folder. This will cause it to be loaded last, rather than first.
