I've been trying to install LinuxPPC 2000 on a 400 Mhz, 6x DVD, FireWire PowerBook (which has the latest Firmware). I have installed LinuxPPC 1999 and 2000 many times on an iMac without problems.

After I've set my computer up to boot from with yaboot, and put in the LinuxPPC CD, it starts to boot and reads from the CD; However, when it starts to check the disk, it says: "hda: lost interrupt" and completely shuts down the DVD-ROM drive. This text appears a few times and then it says it will soon start the installer, but then continues to report "hda: lost interrupt" ... nothing happenes.

I have tried using yaboot, BootX, "LinuxPPC_Boot.sit.bin" which I downloaded from the website - but the error is always the same.

Any ideas?

I had the same message on my G4 after i installed MacOS 9.04.
When I first installed LinuxPPC I ran MacOS 9.0 and it just worked fine, after upgrading my MacOS the Linux partition wouldn't boot anymore :-(

Did you follow the install directions for New World Machines as outlined on the LinuxPPC site: http://www.linuxppc.com/support/upda...install_update

This worked perfectly for my 'book. Also, once that is all done, you might want to update your kernel to the 2.2.17, or the BenH development kernels. They add a lot of support for this model 'book: http://ppclinux.apple.com/~benh

abe12345: I've done a lot of research, and I've done the installation by the book (that is: http://www.linuxppc.com/support/upda...nstall_update) and I've tried using the "ibook" kernel, but then my computer shuts completely down (immediately).

I cannot install any system software prior to 9.0.4 (right?).

I'm not giving up on this.

There are no known issues with MacOS 9.0.4 and LinuxPPC for the firewire powerbook if you are using the latest version of yaboot and using the ibook kernel to do the install. I followed the directions on the LinuxPPC site and was able to install LinuxPPC 2000 on my my firewire powerbook. If you still can't get it to work, take a look at the following and double check that you are setting it up correctly: http://www.cloud13.com/ppc/install.html

It works and works well, just keep trying.
cheers,

Well, I finally got it up and running!

Thank you guys for the help!

It had something to do with yaboot ... something not set up correctly.
