Is there are way to use .dmg disc images under OS9?
I am not interested in burning out the images under OSX, or using some unsupported beta of Disc Copy, but rather either mount them under OS9, or eventually convert them to a format useable under OS9. Convertion can be done under X, if necessary.
All help highly appreciated.

.dmg files cannot be converted to .img under Mac OS X. Under Mac OS 9, you must mount it, and then drag the mounted volume onto Disk Copy.

You can convert your .dmg to .img in OSX with DropDMG. Go to Version Tracker to find the web site.

Sorry, I've made a mistake: you must use DMG Tool (not Drop DMG) to convert Your .dmg to .img
