Open to any suggestions , I am looking to buy a monitor for my 12" Powerbook. I am considering price range of $300-$500 , something nice to compliment the powerbook (silver or white)
The Samsung 19'' looks good or should I go with a tv / computer monitor

I know this may sound strange, but check out the Dell LCD monitors. They are cheep, and would go with your price range. You are going to have a hard time finding a 17" or 19" for the price you want to pay. You also may not get the quality you desire either. For example I purchased a 600 buck 19" LCC made by MAG a little over a year ago. Its a good monitor but in comparison to my 15" PB monitor it SUCKS. The PB monitor displays tight, clean images, when the MAG monitor displas rougher quailty. Thats my advice...

Maybe find a college student or teacher and pay a little more for the 17" Apple Cinema for $599?

The Dell 20 inch monitors are pretty much the best deal you can get right now. Very large crisp displays with fast response time. The actual specs are 16ms at 1600x1200. They cost about $750 when on sale so you'd have to wait and save a bit more, but they are well worth it. I personally own a samsung 191T which is the highest end samsung display (dvi and analogue... now replaced by the even sexier 193T). I really wish I'd had the chance to purchase the dell when I got mine, but it was before they came out. The silver on the samsun displays will match the PB perfectly. If I get a chance tomorrow I'll take a picture and post it here if you'd like.

I just went through this search myself, and here's the result. Here is my reasoning and why I purchased the 20" Apple Cinema Display, expensive as it may seem. With a 17" or 19" you go from 1024x768 to 1280x1024. Why should I spend money on a monitor to increase my desktop real estate and only gain 256 pixels in resolution. The problem with the 19" LCDs is they still only give you a 1280x1024 resolution. I wonder if anybody knows of a 19" that produces a higher resolution than 1280x1024?
The ACD is probably out of your budget, but I agree with wuzup101 that the Dells are by far the best LCDs I've seen compared to Apple's. I work for a company that has a fairly large Network Operations Center monitoring our Data Centers, and each one of the operators has one of those beautiful Dell monitors to work with. The response time is impressive (LAN party tested). Plus, you'll get a big boost in real estate from 1024x768 to 1600x1200. You won't regret the decision to spend a little more for a lot of desktop.

I don't know about Pstyles, but I'd like to see that Samsung with your PowerBook.

i wanna see the samsung too.
ideally an ACD would be the best for your PB, but it's not such an ideal choice for my wallet.

Samsung 17" 172NX
That would be my monitor of choice on a relative budget. Of course my ideal monitor would be a new 20" ACD, which I saw at my local Apple store last night (drool).

I don't disagree with the decision to buy the 20" display, but I just wanted to point out that this is pretty poor math analysis above. 1280*1024 actually gives you 67% more (e.g. 1.67 times) screen real estate than a 1024*768 screen.
I totally agree that it seems hardly worth it (unless you have poor eyesight) to go from a 17" to 19" LCD given that the resolution remains the same.

Okay well I took a couple of quick pictures of my powerbook with my 19" samsung 191T. Currently the monitor is hooked up to my PC and that desk you see is my home PC desk. When I get to school I'll get around to posting some pics of the real setup. For now I only bring my PB up to my room when I need to use the extra screen. Other than that, it usually resides downstairs on the kitchen island. My room's a wreck because I never cleaned up after getting home from college... so I appologize for that!

Math is not one of my strongest suits, crouchingtiger is right, the increase of 1280*1024 over 1024*768 is significant. And if you buy the 20" Dell, you get more than double in screen real estate, a 144% increase over 1024*768 (e.g 2.44 times).
