This thing is a bit of a challenge. I wanted to change via the terminal (using the defaults command) the background picture in Finder windows...
This is set in the com.apple.finder preference file:
};
Code:
StandardViewOptions = {
icnv = {
BackgroundFlags = 0;
BackgroundPictureURL = "file://localhost/Volumes/Macintosh%20HD/YOURPICTURE.jpg";
BackgroundType = PctB;
};
};
I've done a lot of experiments but the problem is that this tag is double nested...
For example with this command,
Code:
defaults write com.apple.finder "DesktopViewOptions" '{ "ArrangeBy" = grid; "BackgroundFlags" = 0; "BackgroundPictureURL" = "file://localhost/Library/Desktop%20Pictures/Abstract%204.jpg"; "BackgroundType" = PctB; "IconSize" = 48; }'
You can overwrite a single nested tag...

You could do this in Panther buy changing the 0 to a 1 in the right background flags section of the Finder preferences, but this doesn't fully work in Tiger. It will sort of tile an image a few times, but seems to stop after one horizontal row.
I spoke with the author of TinkerTool regarding making this a future option in this excellent piece of shareware but he ultimately said it could not be done. Why Apple can’t do it and add it as a preference I just don’t get.

To dislike Sinatra is a sign of highly questionable taste. To dislike the Beatles is a serious character flaw.
