Whenever I turn on speakale items my iMac will now never make the dialling sounds when it is dialling into my ISP.. anyone know why this is?

Its entirely possible that Apple were thinking clever and automatically mute the modem sound to avoid feedback when the microphone is listening, or to avoid it making noises that would confuse the speech recognition.
