I just received my copy of Macsoft's port of TROPICO. Initially, the game seem to be real cool - until further gameplay proved this game unplayable.

On a G4 with a radeon and almost a gig o'ram, Tropico begins to pause, stutter and move like a dead slug in a salt mine after an hour or so of gameplay. Moving from OpenGL to software did nothing, as did all the other standard tweaks (small screen size, sound off, etc) It basically runs like a peecee game running under VPC.

Just wondering if anyone else problems.

that's all folks!

I picked it up at MWNY after being impressed playing through the tutorial there.

And then I brought it home- what a piece of dog crap! I'm having the same slowdowns you are, but mine eventually just up and dies, which is incredibly annoying. Are you running yours on X? I thought that might be my problem, but I hate the thought of having to reboot into OS 9.

This game is shaping up to be a worse port than Sim City 3K...

I went to Infogrames for tech support and they basially said "Sorry, reboot into 9". Admittedly, Tropico runs fine under OS 9, but I specifically bought the game because of the (alleged) OS X support. I suggest y'all bitch directly to them (go to Macsoft's site and click on Support).

So, has anyone tried Tropico in 9? I might be willing to still get it, b/c I still boot in 9 often--but that still sucks big time about the X problem.

That's unfortunate that the game runs as it does in OS X. OS 9 and older still dominate the market so expect to have to reboot in order to get some of your favorite games running optimally. If performance is the only major factor that's keeping the game from being 'fun' then reboot into OS 9 so the game will be 'fun' and hope that a patch comes out. Better yet, email Macsoft (nicely) and ask for the issue to be taken care of. And seriously, if you're going to be playing a game for hours at a time, how does a 1 minute reboot affect your day?
For Quake3, despite the fact that there's an OS X version, I still prefer to use the OS 9 version because it's faster. And Diablo II is currently Classic only, so I've been spending more time in OS 9 since LoD came out. I'll probably wait until 10.1 comes out before I start using OS X as my daily OS again.

a2daj,

I'd agree with your point if there weren't a fat "Built For OS X" sticker on the box. I can tolerate rebooting into OS 9 for games like UT that simply haven't been updated, but if a game is advertized as running under OS X (a big reason I selected it), I expect it to work as such.

I'd be very interested in how this game works under 9 - no big deal to reboot for me. However, my main machine is a Wallstreet PowerBook: OpenGL sucks on this machine and I'm wondering about the keyboard/touchpad (does it cry out for a full-size keyboard) and speed (3oomhz G3). I've got plenty of RAM and a fast HD (enough to copy the CD onto disc).

Alternately, I do have a PC to play games on - do you get both Mac and PC versions in the box or only Mac?

Being from the Caribbean, I *really* want to play as the dictator of my home island (he's one of the standard choices!). Which reminds me, if you play as, say, Trujillo, does the game island look like the Dominican Republic? Or if Fidel, is the island Cuba?
