I don't know how or why, but I lost the "Appearance" control panel. The window that normally opens when clicking on Appearance is no longer accessible. So therefore I am no longer able to change the desktop appearance, theme, etc. Any suggestions humbly accepted.

Is the file present in the Finder? Can you bounce an AppleScript off of it?

Use this:

tell app "Appearance"
path to it
end tell

I ran the suggested applescript and received: Where is Appearance? I do have a folder with the name of Appearance, that contains the following folders: Desktop Pictures, Sound sets, and Theme Files. Clicking on any item contained in them, brings up this statement:
The document " " could not be opened, because the application program that created it could not be found.
The window that comes up when normally clicking on the Appearance control panel is nowhere to be found.

No there isn't. That's the problem I was referring to in the original post.

The file just disappeared??? Wow that's weird.

Download TomeViewer (http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=4561) and extract Appearance from the Installer Tome Files on your Mac OS Installer CD. Make sure it has the creator code 'cdev', because there might be other Appearance files in the Tome.
In vino veritas.

Sorry I haven't responded earlier. I was away. I'm not sure I know how to go about doing what you suggest. I have TomeViewer, but I haven't the slightest idea of how to apply it. I can find no "Read Me" or tutorial on it. If you can walk me through the procedure, I would greatly appreciate it.
