Hmmm. You will need a USB or Firewire Audio interface for this unless you want crappy recordings through the Mac's built-in mechanism (assuming you're using a PB or iBook). Which leads me to this question -

How exactly does the M-Audio MobilePre work with Garageband?

Actually, with a very good quality analoge mixer (Mackie or Yamaha, etc), and a good mike (this is key), you can get decent professional results with the mike input on any Mac. I've done it many times, recording radio broadcasts and other things using Peak LE for voice and GarageBand for music. A good mixer really helps.

I just got a Griffin iMic and it seems to do a good job getting audio into my PB. It's a USB device that you plug your audio source into. I've been using it to convert my records.
