I live in the United Arab Emirates and I have ordered the iPad which a friend will bring for me from the States. But I have come to the realization that I won't be able to get any of the apps or use iBooks since I won't have access to the United States AppStore living here.
Is there any way around this? Appreciate any help.
Thanks

You have a US itunes account already which you bought music and movies from before?

If you have a US mailing address that someone will let you use, you can make a US iTunes account. If not, then maybe you could contact Arab Business Machine and see what they know, if anything.

Make sure you have your friend in the US buy as much money worth of iTunes gift certificates as you will want to spend. Then use any US address -- real or fake -- and open a US iTunes account with the "redeem" function within iTunes.

I'd recommend this approach. Pretty much all you need is a friend's US mailing address (assuming they don't have an iTMS account already), but redeeming gift cards just makes it easier and less likely to fail.

I've got good news for you!
You should do a search on your country's itunes store for ipad.
It's probably up to date they just don't have the apps up front and center.
At least that's the situation in Greece and it's not even one of the countries that will be in the April 24th launch.
I downloaded lots of apps so far and I'm glad to see the prices on par with the US prices.
The only issue is the ibooks app. There's nowhere to be seen. But that is expected. It's one of the apps that are US centric like movies and some music. But I'm fortunate to have a gift card!!!
Anyway try it out and let us know!!

You dont even need a "friend" in the US. There's a couple of sites that just email you the iTunes code to redeem - google "buy iTunes vouchers online"- they charge like $18 or so for a $15 voucher, but thats fine by me.
Then set up a new itunes account (click on the country flag bottom left on itunes store homepage, change to US) use a fictitious but real address (nothing ever gets mailed there) and use the iTunes voucher code as your method of payment (leaving the credit card .fields blank). Can't think of a zip code; Beverley Hills 90210 baby... and use google maps to find a street
I'm writing this on my iPad from the Cayman Islands
Job done!

No idea whether this applies to the iPad/iPhone/iTouch/etc., but many providers will not let you download from an international IP address regardless of your mailing address. I'm a US customer on Amazon and have tried to download Kindle books from various SE Asian countries (and even the UK!) and Amazon wouldn't let me download.
Something to think about...

By proxy you mean? Generally that's because (as discussed above) you need to have a billing address in the country.

As someone mentioned, many of the apps may already be in your store. They just aren't organized into a separate iPad app section yet.
But yeah, if you don't have that specific app in your store, you can do the iTunes gift certificate thing.

The iPad won't connect to the app store directly yet, unless you open an account with the US store. You can sync & buy from international stores ok though via a PC or Mac. These are then synced the next time you dock.
But yes I've seen the amazon thing too - it won't work even if you use a VPN either, there were some free kindle books on there too drat!
iBooks is ONLY available via the US store, but kindle works anywhere

but i most admit, ipad apps are pretty pricey as compared to iphone apps. the cost of ipad maybe low but seems like the cost of apps will stack up over time
