I am planning on using my G5 only setup for audio needs and getting rid of my separates system as I hardly use it any more...

Don't want to spend the earth, but want something better than a Yamaha YST USB speaker system which I currently have.

Over in the the Powermac forum a guy recommends Edirol speakers using the Toslink connection... Looks tempting n price alone. but I know nothing of the technology and expected sound quality...

Anyone put forward any solutions that would fit the bill?

Cheers,

Marc

personally, i've kept the Amp & speakers from my separates and connected my Mac to the amp via a 3.5mm mini-jack to 2 phonos - much means i still got my thumping speakers

or you could wait until the Airport Express is shipped and use that with your current sound system.

I totally forgot about Airport Express! Looks like it could be problem solved!

Thanks for the reminder!

Couple of options for you. You can use the built in Optical audio ports on the G5 and connect it to a nice stereo system. Or, buy an Airport Express and allow ALL your computers with wireless to connect to your fancy stereo system.

I like Kenwood. They make GREAT beginning stereo equipment. If you're looking for a cheaper, but high quality stereo system, Kenwood is awesome. I have a V-407 and it's been just great.

Does the Toslink connector work when the G5 boots? Do you get the chime from it at boot time? I'd like to know if the Toslink works ALL the time, only because I saw that some people use the analog connector for "alerts" which makes no sense to me. Thanks.

Have to second the Kenwood equipment. I just had to replace mine as the main stereo since the s-video out went bad and was giving me a bad picture but the rest of the unit is fine. Not a big deal since I wanted to go to component in and out and needed more optical ports.

Anyway, the Kenwwod is now going to be my new stereo setup for the G5. I am about to replace the surround sound speaker setup on the home theater and those will be for the G5 also. Should give me an awsome setup when done.

If you're going to be doing any recording/mixing, I highly recommend these:

http://alesis.com/products/m1active/

They're self-powered, so all you need is stereo line-outs. I run mine off two channels of a M-Audio Delta 44.

They're loud, clean, and extremely accurate. I like them quite a bit better than the Yamaha NS-10s they were made to compete with.

Airport Express is a good idea for connecting your speakers wirelessly for music but I dont think it would work if you wanted to play a game or movie on your G5.
