One of my coworkers needed someone to cover the night shift so he could go out with his wife for her birthday. No one wanted to, so I told him I would work a double so he could have the night off. Now my ass is dragging, and I really wish I was at home, all snuggled up in my bed. That's not the bad part though. I just watched the clock reel back one hour. I forgot today is daylight savings time. The electrician just spooled back the clocks. I'm now working 9 hours of overtime instead of 8. It's going to be a long drive home....

Think of how much your co-worker would appreciate being able to take his wife out for her birthday. That was very generous of you. Getting paid overtime as well is just a bonus

I have one and a half large, cold mountain dews sitting in fron of me. I've read the sunday paper, finished Steve Martin's The Pleasure of My Company, clipped my nails, and cranked the music up louder than is appropriate. I still have an hour and a half to kill. Then I get my 45 minute drive home. That should be interesting...

At least the extra hour rounded me out to a nice even 25 hours of OT for the week.

Did mos get you a job?
Honestly, for time like that, it's not bad. Next time, download a book from audible.com or iTMS and listen to that. Good way to pass the time quickly and you can listen in your car, if you can burn a disc, or load it on an iPod and play it that way.

Plus, the married guy owes you a serious solid. So you got that goin' for ya... which is nice.

To dislike Sinatra is a sign of highly questionable taste. To dislike the Beatles is a serious character flaw.

What doesn't kill you can still suck as you live to experience the pain and discomfort and associated bad things.

I worked 12 hour nights shifts, three days in a row, every week this summer. At a film processing center. The worst, job, ever.

I work in a lonny bin. When we stay for overtime, we get to pick our post. I had my choice of hooker patrol (we are located right smack dab in the middle of the 'hood), one-on-one pyscho baby sitting (no thanks, the last thing I wanted to do is watch someone sleep). refereeing the lunatic rodeo (No thanks, I did that on my own shift and had no great desire to do it on someone else's), or working in the communications center where I can kick my feet up, turn on some tunes, read a book or two, and if an alarm goes off, get the proper people to where they gots to go. I chose that last option.

I think I may have set a record on the drive home. There wasn't a trooper in sight on the high way, so I took that as a sign get moving. Now I am well rested and all is well.

As for the guy owing me, he's working next saturday for me so I can go to the opening of the Apple store.

I'm looking forward to learning about this "paid overtime" of which you speak. I spent over 23 years in a job that combined the need for 24/7/365 access to me and my particular expertise with a fixed salary...and I couldn't quit either. Military is like that. I'm working on qualifications for a new job that should be both hourly and well paid. Maybe then I'll understand...

I'm assuming you don't live in California.

That's really too bad, cause after 12 hours, we get double time . (that's why I genetrally have no problem with my 18 hour days at Fry's Electronics - it pays well)

er... not trying to rub it in or anything
