Gas. I'm going to send $600 to a credit card that I don't use so that I will have a $600 credit. Then when I take my Seadoo to the lake for the day, I can fill it up on the way home without worrying about the money. Unfortunately, $600 is only about 12 days of fun.

You win some, you lose some. Also, I'm considering posting a picture of my date and I from this weekend, should her sisters ever recover from their hangovers and put them up on facebook.

Does anyone use Debit in the US? Most of us Canadians just use Debit cards for that: Stick the amount in the bank, and withdraw it directly from the account. No credit card middleman... unless you need credit or want to rack up cash back or flight points or whatever.

The benefit of this is that anyone can get a debit card, even if you have terrible credit rating, since you're not actually getting credit. The second benefit is that the retailer sees it like cash. For example, here if you go to some cheap computer store, they give cash or debit discounts. Credit cards mean a 3% premium.

Sure, they're much more convenient than checks. But that is also the problem, their much more convenient than checks. Makes spending easy.

I use my credit card a little as possible.

I use debit, however for large purchases (in excess of $500) it turns out to be useless.

Of my $600 about $300 will be spent on a moving van moving
my possessions from Baltimore, MD to Syracuse, NY. I am un-
employed and will be living with my Mom through September.
As for the rest of the money, that will go towards my $300+
dental bill in June for getting two cavities filled. I hope that is
the kind of economic stimulus President Bush had in mind.

Yes, I use debit almost exclusively. But in this case, if the money goes into that account, it's more likely to be spent so it's more of a forced savings. Sort of.

Somehow, I don't think money to the oil and credit card companies is what our economy needs, but I'm glad the government is not telling us how to spend it.

But unfortunately, my Seadoo requires it.

But when I go to the lake, I buy other things that I wouldn't normally buy so that helps the economy, right?

That is exactly what the $600 is for. You spend the money somewhere, they spend the money you gave them somewhere, on and on...

On the other hand, if someone nicks your debit card details they can drain your entire bank account before you know it's gone - as opposed to only hitting your credit card limit.

There is? I've not noticed it on mine, and the only thing I use it for is buying cars.

It depends on the bank for debit cards, since a debit card is essentially an ATM card. It also depends or whether the card is used as debit or credit. Some can be used either way, and the network to process credit cards is totally different than the network used to process debit cards.

You just need to call the bank ahead of the purchases. When i bought our HDTV, TiVo S3, and a few other gadgets I would have hit the limit, but I called ahead to remove the daily limit for a day.

So basically you're safe unless it happens to be stolen on the day it had the daily limit removed.

Yes there is. But then again there is a limit on credit cards too. Mind you, the debit card limit is usually quite a bit lower.

They could probably empty my checking account before hitting any type of limit. If anyone goes through the trouble of stealing my debit card, the joke's on them.

You need to change banks then. My banks offer complete protection and will forward the funds to me until their investigation is complete.

Most debit cards nowadays are debit/credit cards through either mastercard or visa.

I had a fraudulent charge of 270 bucks on my debit/credit card and I had the money back seconds after placing the call.

In fact, I haven't seen a strictly 'debit' card in a long time now.

Yep, certainly.

Any debit card in this day and age should have the same protection as a major credit card.

They're just MC/Visa based so that the transactions are handled through the MC/Visa network/system. It's either a debit card or a credit card, not both. They "act" like a credit card at the Point of Sale so that more stores can handle them.

No, they don't.

A debit card takes the money directly from your checking account.
Disputes of these kind of charges fall under different rules than credit cards.

Your bank *might* be as lenient with debit card charges as they are with credit cards, but often, debit charges are more a pain to deal with than credit card charges.

Actually they are different.

Credit transactions go through several days after the purchase and a debit transaction is instantly deducted from my account. Both work almost the same way, but a credit transaction is not an instant deduction from my checking account.

I know the credit over debit thing is in no way similar to a real credit card, but nevertheless, the fraud protection is exactly the same.

Not if the transaction is a 'credit' purchase.

I've already dealt with this and it wasn't a pain at all. I called and said I had a charge from Illinois and within that day my money was back in the account with no questions asked.

I guess Sovereign just kicks ass.

Not here in Canada. Almost all debit cards are true debit cards. Not that I've actively looked for those credit card company debit cards, but nonetheless I don't think I've ever seen one here.

I don't know if it's true in the US or not, but for this reason debit is considered equivalent to cash. There are no credit card commissions to speak of, which is why you might get a 2-3% debit using discount vs. credit at a few stores (particularly when buying computer parts, since they sell at such low margins). Does it work the same way for debit cards in the US when they're issued by a credit card company?

AFP: US government begins tax rebates to stimulate economy

The US government began giving out tax rebates Monday in hopes the instant cash will spark consumer spending to revive an economy many analysts believe is in recession.

The stimulus plan is expected to cost 152 billion dollars this year.
