See this thread for starters.
Short suggestions: you need a 2.5" SATA drive, go for 5400RPM or faster, try to get a 3-year+ warranty model. IMO, the $90 160GB WD Scorpio from NewEgg is a good drive/price.

The 250 GB Scorpio is on sale at Best Buy this week for $130. That's .52/gig

You can also use Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable clone of your MacBook on your external drive. Then if you put the new drive in your MB, you can boot off of the external drive, format the new internal drive, and clone the external drive to the internal one. In that case, you won't need to reinstall at all.

For creating a bootable clone, see the CCC docs.
To boot off an external drive, hold down option on bootup. You should get a list of bootable drives. Select the one you wish too boot off.
Note that to be bootable, you'll need to make sure the external drive and new internal drive are formatted using a GUID Partition Table (GPT). This can be done from Apple's Disk Utility program (/Applications/Utilities/).
