Myn says Capacity = 3944. Amperage = 2428

Is that bad or good for a 15.2'' AL Book?

So I bought a new battery this week.

Running it right now on rev A Powerbook 17 in DVD mode and full screen brightness, with no Bluetooth or Airport on, and this is ridiculous:

Watching a 2 hour DVD is impossible. The low battery warning comes on at 1:30 into the DVD. The warning came on at 10% which also corresponded to 10 minutes of battery left. So I am looking at batteries that last 1:40 to watch a DVD? There are a lot of movies out there that last longer than that, including this DVD I am watching.

WTF?

I have reset the PMU....no dice on better battery life.

Since this battery performance is similar to my original battery, I am starting to think there is something wrong with the Powerbook.

I really don't want to be without my Powerbook for weeks because of this. What a bummer.

D'oh. Send us the stats from the terminal everyone's posting on each battery.

EDIT: Weeks?? What takes weeks, if it needs repair: overnight to apple apple gets it, one or two days to fix normally overnight back to you.

The only machine I had to send to Apple was my Titanium (fried ethernet card) and it took a MONTH to get it back. And that included taking it to a Houston CompUSA, sending it to a Dallas repair station, and getting it back to me in Houston. Hopefully that was rare.

Oh gosh, don't do that, call Apple, have them send you a box overnight, put yours in the box they send and have the Airborne Express person take it with them. Apple will get it the next day and it seems usually repairs in a day or two and overnights back t you. For even faster service, take it to an apple store that won't need to wait for the box to come and they'll ship it out that day if it's not too late.

Thanks for the tip. I was just at the Store the other day getting a new battery and they said they would replace the four feet that have come off the Powerbook if I just waited around for a few minutes. Pretty cool.

I am testing the original battery to see if it is any worse/better than my new battery. So far it looks the same....1:40 to 1:45 of battery playing a DVD in DVD mode at full brightness with no Bluetooth or Airport or any other apps running.

Is anybody else getting similar battery life in this configuration?

Sure thing. So, what does each battery show for capacity via the terminal function that most people here are running (it's like the 2nd post or so in the thread)?

I'm pretty sure that your battery is showing an incredibly high capacity, which certainly should mean you'll get >2 hours.

Guys when you calibrate your batteries it is important that you run it down then let it charge overnight or for a good amount of time and do not use it, at least 8 hours I'd say. I have calibrated mine a few times and after each I get a new capacity. After the last time done the way I described above I am getting

4509

This is up from before previously 4432 this is also reflected in actual usage time

On a Ti400, I'm getting:

"Capacity"=149,"Amperage"=1200,"Current"=148,"Volt age"=16302,"Flags"=838860805

It was doing close to three hours before the first 10.2.8, dropped to 24 minutes thereafter, then went down to 10 mins. The second 10.2.8 didn't help and I was hoping Panther might. It didn't...

One way or another, it's toast, unless recalibration helps or something like that.

I'm getting 316 on my Rev B PB 667... It can sleep for a day without turning off, but that's pretty much it. Can't say I've treated it very good, but still...

In may this year I could get enough juice out of it to take me through a DVD. After an upgrade (10.2.5?) it went downhill fast, apparently.

Time to get a new one I s'pose.

ouch, did you guys do the calibration as people indicated? In less than a year, I can't imagine that a battery should go bad, even if you use it a lot.

Another thing... I'm a little command line-impaired so I probably messed up what I should type. But my output {"Capacity"=316, "Amperage"...etc gets truncated at "Current" with a $-sign at the end. What gives?

Brand new battery, 17" rev A

"Capacity"=4929,"Amperage"=1200,"Current"=4908,"Vo ltage"=12522,"Flags"=838860805

Original battery (May 2003 purchase)

Capacity"=5062,"Amperage"=1200,"Current"=5050,"Vol tage"=12505,"Flags"=838860805

When I bought the battery from the Apple Store, it had zero charge. I charged it, ran it all the way down, then charged it again, and ran it down again. I believe that is the proper way to calibrate the battery.

Something wrong with the Powerbook?

i could be wrong, but i think the way you run it down matters. i recently had my capacity go down to 2900 or so. it's about a month old. recenlty, i had the screen set to minimum, and was only working on a word doc. bluetooth, airport were turned off. not sure how long it lasted, but i then recharged it overnight, and capacity went back up to 3400 or so. fwiw.

here's mine;
tibook 400mhz
"IOBatteryInfo" =
({"Capacity"=1168,"Amperage"=1024,"Current"=662,"V oltage"=14943,"Flags"=
4})

ever since the 10.2.8 update mine has been kinda bad. then i "upgraded" to panther and it went to hell in a handbasket. This is after a few recalibrations and resetting the power management button. I can get a new apple brand battery for $116, but do any other manufacturers make replacements that perform better for less? I guess getting 2 years out of the battery isn't that bad is it?

My battery capacity is 5 times better than any other in this thread!

On the other hand, this might explain why my PB always shuts itself down when it reaches 89% battery capacity. Anyone know if it's possible to reset this somehow? (I've already tried to reset PMU and NVRAM)
I have the same problem with my 1Ghz Ti. It is running panther.

FWIW, I get Capacity=3622 and Amperage=2. 1 year old 1 GHz TiBook.

powerbook G4, 550MHz, 1GB RAM, 60GB fujitsu drive

current battery (model A1012): "Capacity"=4127,"Amperage"=1200,"Current"=3786,"Vo ltage"=16701

previous battery (model M8511): "Capacity"=259,"Amperage"=1200,"Current"=259,"Volt age"=16406

10.2.8 killed my first battery ... i'm wondering how many people had 10.2.8 kill their battery life and what model batteries it killed. i'm guessing the electronics within the battery changed since the early models and 10.2.8 actually damaged those early batteries.

i've read differing ways to treat lithium ion batteries. some say to run it all the way down, others say to run it no lower than 40% if at all possible. where is the definitive source for how to properly treat your battery (depending on the technology it employs)?

if battery life is dependent on the number of discharge/charge cycles, should i remove my battery once it's charged if i remain plugged into the wall? should i avoid plugging it back in if i've only been unplugged for a short time? what are the "best practices" for maintaining your battery?

Uh oh. My battery may be out to lunch.

I get about 4Hrs on my 6mo old 800MHz 12iB but the check returns the following:

({"Voltage"=11980,"Flags"=4,"Amperage"=85$

There is no closing })

How do I reset the Power Management? (My Apple Help was not of any.

No, I checked that. I found an AKP article and reset the PMU. Still no Capacity measurment.

Is there an AKB document on conditioning the battery?

3 year old PowerBook Pismo with dead battery...im guessing the first capacity is taking from my grounding, since im plugged in with the ac adapter. the second reading, must be the dead battery, but its still producing some stuff. anyone have any suggestions on how to revive the battery? when inside, its giving me 0% charge, and the minute i unplug the computer from grounding, it goes to sleep. can i still callibrate it somehow?

thanks.

Okay, some more follow-up: after about two weeks of using my PB on a daily basis, and numerous charge/discharge cycles, my capacity is down to 4185. This is a pretty shocking drop considering that it's come down 5% in only 2 weeks of use, but I can't yet say whether it's indicative of a trend. I sure hope not!

Can't we just agree on a simple real world test and then compare with the capacity number?

Time tests

a) Shut off any bluetooth antenna, set the screen to mid-brightness and surf the internet through airport until battery switches off.

b) Run a DVD that lasts approx 2 hours (like the guy above) with all antennas on and full brightness.

And _then_ post your capacity number as well as powerbook model and how long you've had it for.

Perhaps we can finally get some meaningful numbers then...

Ok, here is mine - brand new Rev B 17 with Panther, Fujitsu Drive

"IOBatteryInfo" = ({"Capacity"=5707,"Amperage"=2020,"

I did some calibration at first, but working while recharging.

*much joy here*

Ok, this is what I am getting today:

| | | | "IOBatteryInfo" = ({"Voltage"=14639,"Flags"=4,"Amperage"=910,"Capaci ty"=65494,"Current"=64967})

My capacity as of yesterday was .214 AH, but now is over 65 AH, currently with no power plugged in. Can anyone explain this?

This is a good idea.

I am going to try the "a" test now, with Energy Saver set to High Performance.
